I love the little language game Gerrard and
Hanna play in this card's flavor text. Their
saga also would have made for a good comic book
storyline, come to think of it. They may no
longer be in the storyline spotlight, but you'll
probably find that Null Rod is in the spotlight
for eternal formats surprisingly often. Unlike
many cards with similar effects, it does affect
mana abilities, and so has been a weapon of
choice against Moxes and Lotuses since basically
the day it was released. Beyond such settings,
it's somewhat of a solution looking for a
problem - it definitely stops a lot of crazy
Esper stuff, Master Transmuter, and Ravager
Affinity, but it's not your only option and
there are less overkilling ways to shut them
down. You have to be even more careful about
using it in formats like Commander, where your
own deck may end up depending on some of the
same artifact staples and you have multiple
opponents who will perceive you as a target.
:sigh: ...Really? You couldn't have made this a
4 drop to cover all bases, maybe tacked on a
payment and a tap just to keep it slightly
fairer? ...for now, skip.
