This is clearly a reference to Zendikar's Magosi,
the Waterveil, a mysterious location that seemed
to have some strange relationship with the
forces of time. Unfortunately, Sorin and Nissa
didn't visit Magosi in Robert Wintermute's In
the Teeth of Akoum, so we don't have that much
insight into it, and I suspect Gideon and his
friends aren't going to have much time to look
into things this time around. I'm not even sure
there's going to be a novel for this block,
which is unfortunate.
This card obviously doesn't look that efficient
compared to historical extra turn cards, but
then I suspect it was never really intended to.
I think we were supposed to look at the awaken
cost, which is significantly higher than its
regular cost but achievable in the right deck,
and take advantage of that. It's also a solid
way to keep a control deck truly creatureless,
and even avoid hate directed at non-basic lands
that turn into creatures if you were concerned
about such a thing. And if you combine it with
Aggravated Assault so you can have extra combat
phases on your extra turn, that's maximum style
points.
Today's card of the day is Part the Waterveil
which is a six mana Blue sorcery that has you
take another turn and exile it and has Awaken
six for nine mana. This is a relatively
weak Time Walk variation with the side benefit
of adding a 6/6 threat that can get two attacks
in before the opponent can really react.
Aside from that other Blue options in the past
could add another turn for less mana or possibly
multiple turns. Outside of Standard pretty
much any deck looking for a source of extra
turns will look to another card and this is
unlikely to see much play.
In Limited this is a potential game winning
topdeck, particularly with Awaken as it
functions without support, though the high mana
cost makes it terrible until then. A risky
first pick in Booster with a high payoff and a
tempting top end of a Blue centered build in
Sealed.
