For a Dragon Hunter, this guy will rarely defeat
one in combat (unless you count Fire-Belly
Changeling), but perhaps that makes more sense
conceptually. The whole point of fighting
dragons is that you should feel like the
underdog, and it should be a real event if you
manage to survive, much less win. And this guy's
stats put him at a very useful place in Magic -
a specialized anti-dragon card that's closer to
them in cost will also come down closer to the
time when they have developed their side of the
table and are ready to defend against it, but a
2/1 for one mana makes and early clock and can
hang back to block Ojutai when they start to put
things together.
Today's card of the day is Dragon Hunter which
is a one mana White 2/1 with Protection from
dragons and it can block dragons as if it had
Reach. This is a Savannah Lion with
supported types of human and warrior that is
also a minor counter to dragon builds, which
aren't very common and generally would have burn
or removal support. As a weapon against
dragons this is unlikely to impress and probably
won't be a factor often, but as a one mana 2/1
this is certainly playable and should be a
relatively frequent sight in swarm builds.
In Limited the number of dragons and relatively
few ways to counter them make this a serious
defensive threat and in some situations an
unblockable damage dealer. More often it
can passively prevent a dragon from attacking
until the player can draw a removal spell, so it
has value for that potential alone. A very
easy second pick in booster after a White rare
and automatic inclusion in Sealed even if it
only plays as a 2/1 for one.
