As I mentioned yesterday, the designers of the
Origins set seem to really, really want to have
renown trigger as often as possible. There's
another green renown card with trample, and then
there's this guy. Yeah, he looks a little
mundane compared to recent green creatures of
similar cost like Polukranos. But when you face
a creature this large relatively early, leaving
aside any game text for now, it's very hard to
block favorably, so you often just won't. But
you can't do that against him, because he'll
become unstoppable, so you feel obligated to.
But in this case, he also has game text
prohibiting the standard double-block attempt.
He's going to be the first target for Ultimate
Price or a stealing effect, but any deck that
lacks such things is in for a very rough time.
Today's card of the day is Outland Colossus
which is a five mana 6/6 with Renown 6 and can't
be blocked by more than one creature. For
Green few creatures call out for Trample more
than this card and with an effect adding it this
can quickly win the game. The low cost and
solid combat effects make this one of the better
choices for the top creature in an aggro build
or an added threat to Commander and Multiplayer
decks.
In Limited this is a very serious threat at a
low mana cost that barring removal or an endless
supply of blockers to throw in the way is very
difficult to actually stop. An easy first
pick in Booster and enough to force playing
Green in Sealed even if the pool isn't quite
strong enough otherwise.
