Cabal Ritual

On Tuesday, we were talking about "unfair" cards that can be used in fair ways. This is kind of the opposite: a relatively toned-down iteration of something which turns out to be just as powerful under the right circumstances. In settings where it takes more work to cast a lot of spells and use a lot of cards, it similarly takes very specific circumstances for Cabal Ritual to make a significant impact. Anywhere else - basically Vintage, because not many people have access to all ten fetchlands at once plus every Brainstorm variant ever printed - it's pretty much the only card that's more efficient than Dark Ritual, and has appeared in some of the most ridiculous decks in history. It's actually rather hard for me to give it a rating because of that, because it is very much feast or famine in certain ways.

Cabal Ritual (9/1)

Cabal Ritual represents the last of the black ritual effects, as fast mana was shifted away from black and into red. It's superficially weaker than Dark Ritual, but it takes full advantage of the Threshold mechanic and all of the Odyssey block graveyard shenanigans. In a deck able to load up its graveyard, this is probably the most powerful ritual effect, generating three net mana off of one card!

Cabal Ritual is a hard card to evaluate in a vacuum, as its power depends largely on the environment it's a part of. It benefitted from being in the first graveyard-centered block, and it also had the advantage of being in Standard at the time Storm showed up…it turns out that Tendrils of Agony is a powerful finisher if you can chain your way into it. This would be an ideal time for Cabal Ritual if it were to come back in Standard, but Threshold is a hard mechanic to balance and make work.

It has just gotten a premium reprint in From the Vault: Lore, so look out for it if you want a copy.
