Is this seemingly simple action really worthy of
the card's name? After all, the name does remind
us of the reason why Batman often defeats
Superman in semi-canonical (and occasionally in
canonical) storylines. Then again, we are in an
Innistrad block, and a graveyard is almost as
good a place to keep a lot of cards as your
hand. Even if we weren't, there's a good reason
why we're supposed to shuffle our decks
extensively before every game, and five turns
ahead is a lot of time to be rigged in advance.
Contingency Plan is, basically,
a generically-flavored Taigam’s Scheming (from
Khans of Tarkir). In that format, its main goal
was to try and enable delve; here, it’s trying
to help you turn on delirium faster by loading
up your graveyard with cards you don’t need and
setting up your draws.
That said, I think this format is more amenable
to a card like Contingency Plan; the payoff for
delve wasn’t that great in that format, while
delirium is far more powerful overall. Besides
that, it can help late game by culling
unnecessary lands from your top five.
Contingency Plan is never a star, but it’s a
role-player that can pull its weight in any
format.
