I doubt I'll ever get used to seeing black
creatures with stats like Grizzly Bears, at
least from the point of view of design
practices. However, in terms of gameplay, there
are increasingly more that are worth considering
for casual, and even for constructed. This guy,
for example, has game text that wouldn't have
been out of place in Mirrodin but synergizes
frighteningly well with Kaladesh's fabricate
keyword. Even if your deck is not specifically
devoted to artifacts, black decks often look to
artifacts to shore up their weaknesses - think
Loxodon Warhammer and Pithing Needle - and if
you need a generic two-cost creature with minor
upside, you could do much worse than this.
One of the better Limited cards in black, Dhund
Operative rewards you for doing what you want to
be doing in Kaladesh (play lots of artifacts). A
3/2 deathtouch for 2 mana is very powerful,
doing damage early and forcing unfavorable
trades later on, and you only need one artifact
for this to “turn on”. Even if you don’t have an
artifact (which could be the case on turn 2),
the Operative is a “bear”, and 90% of Limited
formats like, and rely on, bears (don’t ask
about Rise of the Eldrazi).
If you’re black or black-adjacent, Dhund
Operative is excellent, though it’s more a card
you’d pick up late on in Draft to flesh out your
deck. Outside of Limited, it's a bit too flimsy
to really do much, and there are better choices
for your artifact-using black decks.
