Liliana of the Veil
If this card is an indication of what Liliana
can do when wielding the Chain Veil, I'm
surprised she even bothered joining the
Gatewatch as backup to go after her demonic
patrons. Even with such a low starting loyalty,
she's a dominant force in Modern and a
terrifying prospect for anybody hoping to win a
resource war against her caster. That's before
you even take into account all the ways to make
her +1 discard ability less symmetrical than
it's phrased. In spite of that, I'd recommend
one of her other versions for less cutthroat
settings; while there's often a need for this
sort of effect at casual or EDH tables, there's
rarely a need there for quite this level and
speed of disruption.

Liliana of the Veil (6/30)
If Jace, the Mind Sculptor is king of
planeswalkers, then Liliana of the Veil is the
queen. She's been a force to be reckoned with
since Innistrad.
Three mana is a nice spot for her, and she
offers three potent abilities. Her -2 is the
most-often used of them, clearing out a pesky
creature while leaving her alive to do things.
Her +1 clears out a card from your opponent's
hand (and yours, but it's not hard to make that
work for you), which can keep an opponent from
answering her once she resolves. Her -6 is
really only likely to be used if you're ahead,
but it guarantees your opponent isn't getting
back into the game if you make the piles equally
painful.
Liliana may not be flashy, but she does a lot of
powerful things, and there's a reason she's the
most-common Modern planeswalker anymore. It's
sometimes good to be the queen, it turns out.
