Zur the Enchanter
When Zur was new in Standard, we had just
recently had Enduring Ideal, and there was some
number of people who questioned why he was any
kind of improvement over that card. Of course,
now we know that the answer is that he can be a
commander. The other answer is that for
almost every category of card, especially one of
the fundamental card types, the chance that more
of them will be printed at some point is very
high, even when restrictions like Zur's are
taken into account. Even in the year he was
released, Zur could help you draw cards, destroy
permanents, and steal cheap creatures. I haven't
looked up any more recent EDH decks with him of
late, but he's almost certainly even better now.
