Plague Belcher
I'm not sure how they expect us to think of the
forced -1/-1 counters as any kind of drawback
when the Belcher itself has an ability that
cares when something dies. When you add the
possibility of embalming something later on, he
could be a pretty reliable 5/4 for three mana
(which sets kind of a bad precedent in itself,
if you think about it) and a very powerful card
to combo with anything that counts or removes
counters. Just watch out for Kulrath Knight in
the older formats.

Plague Belchet (5/1)
This might be part of the
Zombie tribal support that the deck needed to
get in
Amonkhet
to be relevant in Standard. On its own, it’s a
3/2 with menace, but another creature on board
makes Plague Belcher potentially a 5/4 with
menace for 3 mana. And if you kill a Zombie to
Plague Belcher’s effect, you start bleeding them
out. It’s not awful on an empty board, but any
bit of sacrificial fodder (or -1/-1 counter
removal) makes the Belcher more brutal.
Even if Zombies aren't a
deck in Standard, this is costed well enough to
make an impact. If they are, this guy, I feel,
will be a huge part of the deck's success.
