Shadow of the Grave

This is a good card to point out when someone says they don't print combo cards any more. I think, though, it will find its best support in sets older than Amonkhet. Last week I talked a little about Astral Slide and Lightning Rift, and there are some cards with truly powerful additional effects when you cycle or discard them - Krosan Tusker comes to mind. I'd also like to see how this does alongside things like Seismic Assault and Knollspine Invocation.

This card looks unusual, but it's potentially very dangerous. The intention is for Shadow of the Grave to work with cycling and some of the other discard effects between Amonkhet and Shadows Over Innistrad, and a discard engine like Noose Constrictor can let you get back a crazy amount of cards. This also works well in more expansive formats; Street Wraith cycles for no mana, which allows you to cycle it again (and this works well with some of the cheaper cyclers), and this pairs decently with Lion's Eye Diamond in Legacy.

On its own, Shadow of the Grave is not spectacular. However, it's the kind of card that can synergize brutally well to create some explosive turns, and I can see it doing a lot of crazy things in Modern and Legacy (and maybe Standard).
