Deck Garage
Deck five of my seven-deck marathon here at Pojo.com. For those of you who are coming in just now, I've received decks from seven different people, all from the same playgroup. Since helping some people in the group without helping others could cause a power shift in the group, it's my duty to fix all seven of these decks in one site update. And since the site updates weekday afternoons, I have to do all seven over the weekend. It's a good thing it's a long weekend here in America!
Ah, standard Simic. Here's a decklist I can really sink my teeth into, seeing as how I've worked on a Simic deck myself. My experience with this deck has taught me a few rules of thumb here. First, the multicolor cards are in general the strongest, so maximize those where possible. Second, green Graft creatures often are aggresively costed bodies with mediocre abilities, while blue Graft creatures have better abilities but smaller bodies for their cost, so in general it's the Green ones that are more powerful since they can get into combat more easily. And third, this deck really wants a lot of mana to run smoothly. It wants you to leave it open on your opponent's turn, too, so you can use it in response to things, like Plaxcaster's ability, the Guildmage's ability, Leafdrake Roost's ability, Root-Kin's ability...nearly every Graft creature has an activated ability, and you'll want to use them in response to things. Deep down, this deck wants to be a control deck.
Simic Signet and Simic Growth Chamber work well because they produce mana in twos. For even more mana doubling, I'd advise Gauntlet of Power. It's a chase rare, yes, and I certainly understand if it's out of your price range, but all that extra mana plus the bonus to your creatures is especially helpful in Simic decks, where a lot of your creatures are base 0/0. And speaking of lands, I don't think Novijen is going to help. You could spend that mana better elsewhere. Replace the Heart of Progress with two more Growth Chamber.
Since you'll be wanting to use your mana in response to things, it's only natural that you'll want plenty of instants so that you can play things at the end of your opponent's turn. Cytoshape is without a doubt the best one you'll find. Voidslime is likely number two. And this affinity towards instant speed makes the Flash mechanic especially useful in a Simic deck. I personally get a lot of mileage out of Plaxmanta-- it acts as a counterspell for spells that target my creatures, it's a great way to surprise your opponent and Graft counters in response to a kill spell, it can be a surprise blocker, and in the early game it can flash into play at EOT and go King Cheetah offense. The new card Ashcoat Bear could do similar things as well, since I often find I want the 2/2 a lot more than the untargetability. Even Sprout could be a concentrated beating-- I had a lot of luck with Scatter the Seeds, but +1/+1 counters on tokens were hard to keep track of. Similarly, you might try Ophidian Eye, since it has flash and it works well with Simic Guildmage.
FInally, there's the question of what to take out for all these wonderful things. Well, Cytoplast Manipulator probably isn't doing too much for you. I'm not entirely sold on Vinelasher Kudzu either. And as much as it pains me to say this, you might not have room for Doubling Season. Doubling Season doesn't come out until turn five, and then it doesn't do anything until you play more Graft creatures or get a Leafdrake Roost active. That might be too slow and require too many resources, and that may be the secret to why you're not getting going fast enough. Goodness knows 4 Birds of Paradise should ensure a reasonably rapid start.
My Simic deck hasn't seen play since Kamigawa block was legal a few months ago, so I may be a bit out of practice with this. But then, I never really did figure out Kamigawa's contribution to Simic, so maybe it's best that I can take a fresh eye to a deck like yours. Only playing games will prove anything here, Antonio, so take it to the streets and good luck to you!
