BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Abbadon version 0.3

03.21.06

Please note that this E-mail was the second that this person sent me; correcting the errors of his first E-mail.

“It has come to my attention that I have committed the error of stating that  I had only one card with blue in it. As you will see in the following deck, this is not the case. I have made two miniscule changes to my deck, and have decided, as to make *your* life easier, to type it straight into this email. I'm not sure how to label or classify my deck--I'm *that* new to the game. Cards from Mirroden, Ravnica, and Guildpact.

And I do have one unrelated question I ask all Magic players...what on Earth is wrong with Unglued's "Ricochet" card, other than the fact that it was in Unglued? Seems completely plausible to me.

First, let me answer the “Ricochet” question—the “problem” with Ricochet is that you have to roll a six-sided die.  While Red cards do like chaos and randomness, they usually get all they need with coin flips or other big, blunt effects.  Players typically scorn coin flip cards because they’re just too unpredictable, and a dice-rolling card would make it even worse.  Besides, it’s not unreasonable to assume a Magic player might have a coin on his or her person, but most players don’t bring six-sided dice to games.

Now for the deck, and what a deck it is, Johnny.  I can’t see any real overarching strategy, you’ve got one copy of almost every copy in here, and all five colors.  It almost looks like a random pile of cards, and that’s surely what it will play like.  You need multiple copies of the cards that are important to you, otherwise you may never draw them.  And with no way of knowing which cards are important to your strategy, I’ll just have to start with the cards you already have multiples of, other than basic lands.

Terrarion
Rally the Righteous
Lighning Helix
Thundersong Trumpeter
Boros Swiftblade
Boros Garrison

Well, this is interesting.  All the cards you already have multiples of are Red and White(plus Terrarion).  For that reason, I’ll first get this deck down to just Red and White.  If we take out any card that requires Black, Blue, or Green mana, we’re left with:

[Creatures]
 [1]; Petrahydrox
 [3]; Boros Swiftblade
[1]; Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran
[3]; Thundersong Trumpeter
[1]; Screeching Griffin
 [1]; Mourning Thrull
 [Count: 10]

[Spells]
 [2]; Lightning Helix
 [1]; Withstand
[2]; Rally the Righteous
 [Count: 5]

[Artifact Creatures]
[1]; Cobalt Golem
[1]; Gold Myr
[Count: 2]

[Artifacts]
[1]; Boros Signet
[1]; Welding Jar
[2]; Terrarion
[1]; Skeleton Shard
[1]; Tanglebloom
[1]; Sunforger
[Count: 7]

I didn’t count the lands—it’s easier to do all the business spells first and then figure out what kind of mana they’ll need.  Besides, the lands are usually pretty obvious; in a Red/White deck, Mountains and Plains plus those Boros Garrisons and maybe a Sacred Foundry if you can get one.
Now, the first thing I recommend is two more Lightning Helix; I just can’t overemphasize how good this card is in a Red/White deck.  Next, add in a full 4 copies of Skyknight Legionnaire, another of Red/White’s best cards.

Now, there are still some things here that need to be dropped.  Petrahydrox for one really has no place here any more.  Withstand isn’t worth three mana, if you really want a prevent damage card, go with Mending Hands or Healing Salve.  Cobalt Golem doesn’t really accomplish anything here any more, and there’s better mana fixers than Gold Myr.  Without artifact creatures, Skeleton Shard becomes useless.  Welding Jar isn’t necessary either, and Terrarion just doesn’t produce mana early enough to be worth the effort.  The Terrarion and Myr are better off as more Boros Signets.

And while we’re talking of artifacts, definitely try for three more Sunforgers.  They’re rare, so that might be difficult, but it’s worth it.  Especially if you can load up on instants to search for.
Now, I’d like to find some cards in Red and White that will make up for the cards I dropped due to color, in case you needed what they did.  You had Culling Sun and Savage Twister, which you can easily replace with Brightflame, Pyroclasm, Wrath of God, etc.  Golgari Thug, Vigor Mortis, Skeleton Shard, and Necromantic Thirst make me think you like being able to reuse cards.  For that, Red and White mostly have cards that can bring themselves back from the graveyard.  Try Firemane Angel, Shard Phoenix, or Skarrgan Firebird if that interests you.  Otherwise all there really is is Breath of Life, Anarchist, and Ritual of Restoration, and I’m reluctant to seriously recommend any of these for your deck.

Finally, let me just point out some good, powerful cards that a Red/White deck can typically get good use out of:

Ghost-Lit Redeemer(works better than Tanglebloom, which you already have one of)
Faith’s Fetters
Boros Recruit
Boros Guildmage
Boros Fury-Shield (and just about any other card with Boros in its name)
Roar of the Kha
Gift of Estates
Disenchant
Suppresion Field (you barely have any activated abilities)
Flames of the Blood Hand
Beacon of Destruction

Obviously I don’t mean that you should use all of these cards, only that any of them would be good in your deck.  Hopefully these suggestions will inspire you to make this the best deck it can be.  Enjoy yourself!
