BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Teysa, Orzhov Scion deck

04.07.06

Hello

 I'm guy from Warrington and I've always loved building combo decks. The latest one is (i think one of the best and easily the most original) it's a black and white deck using, you guessed it teysa orzhov scion! Bassically the combo is to play teysa then play darkest hour (turning all creatures black) so when we sac a black we can get another black! This permits instant kills with, phyrexian ghoul, altar of dementia and forbidden ritual. Just in case your opponent is able to launch an extreme offensive (unlikely considering the 4 mortifys and 4 dark banishings) then darkest hour and hound of honour allows you to set up an effective barrier.
 Now here's the problem, I am not completely sure the combo is legal. Also I do have quite a few mana problems, is this just bad luck or should i use more mana cards? Lastly is there any more effective low cost black creatures for the deck (the ravenous rats are a bit lacklustre)

Creatures=20

4 teysa orzhov scion
4 Bile urchin
4 ravenous rats
4 hand of honour
4 phyrexian ghoul

Other=20

4 Forbidden ritual
4 darkest hour
4 alter of dementia
4 mortify
4 dark banishing

lands=20

10 swamp
10 plains

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks.

I think I should start by explaining exactly how this combo works, and why.  Teysa triggers off black creatures going to the graveyard, and puts white 1/1 Spirit creature tokens into play.  Darkest Hour makes all creatures black, so the Spirit tokens Teysa creates are black instead of white.  When a Spirit token is put into a graveyard, it is immediately replaced by another exactly like it.  I should also note that because Darkest Hour makes all your creatures black (instead of their normal colors), you can't use Teysa's first ability because you no longer control any white creatures.  Therefore, if you have a third combo piece, one that lets you sacrifice creatures for some effect, you can sacrifice Spirit tokens forever and keep getting replacements.  That's what the Ghoul, Altar, and Ritual are for I assume.  One problem-- Forbidden ritual states "nontoken permanent", meaning you can't sacrifice the Spirits to it.  It'll have to come out.

Next, you had a complaint with Ravenous Rats.  In their place, I would suggest Orzhov Guildmage.  His casting cost is a bit more forgiving than Ravenous Rats's, and he gives you a backup plan for winning if the Teysa combo falls through.  Also, he can block 1/1's and live.

Now, to replace those four cards I dropped.  My first impulse is Dimir Machinations, simply because it can transmute into Teysa or the Ghoul.  Another idea, if you have bad mana problems, is four Orzhov Signet, or perhaps four more lands.

Which brings me to the mana problems you mentioned.  Well, my first piece of advice would be to add Godless Shrine, but since they cost an ungodly amount of money, I won't press the issue.  What you might want to try is a set of Orzhov Basilica.  Much less expensive than the Shrine, and almost as good.  Then the other 16 lands can be an even split-- 8 Swamp and 8 Plains.  The Orzhov Guildmages should've softened the deck's mana requirements anyway.
