ATAOM Bomb - (Wolf Deck)

June 1, 2006

This tournament legal wolf deck was created to mirror a story about wolves that I wrote called "After The Age Of Man." (Which is where the name comes from.) It is built entirely of wolves, and I would like it to remain that way. (Tolsimir is an exception for obvious reasons.) It has gone through many revisions, and I am looking for any advice you might have for this. Or at the very least, what problems you see this deck having. I am not too familiar with the current Legacy net-decks. I was hoping to enter it into some tournaments soon. Thanks for your time. :)

This deck looks great, and I have to say it's refreshing to see a deck dedicated to a non-strategic theme.  This short story sounds great; I'm kind of sorry I don't get to read it.  But I do get the next best thing-- to fix the decklist based on it.

My first act was to check Gatherer for any wolf-themed cards that were overlooked.  I found Aspect of Wolf, which probably pales to Alpha Status anyway, Kasimir the Lone Wolf, which is just made of poo and isn't even the right color, Arctic Wolves, which has a cumulative upkeep cost barely worth paying, Wolf Pack, which is one more mana than Thorn Elemental for one less toughness, and Dire Wolves, which actually would work well with your deck.  You do already have Timber Wolves, which has banding, so that shouldn't be an issue.  But what would you take out for it?  The only creature you have with a comparable mana cost is Lone Wolf, and even that you only have 3 of, so I think maybe you're trying to keep your mana costs down.  If so, then don't bother with Dire Wolf.

Next, I'm a bit skeptical about Symbiosis.  For one less mana, you get Giant Growth.  And for a slightly trickier mana cost but the same CMC, you get Seeds of Strength.  Is Symbiosis better than either of those?  Well, it gives you more total bonus than either of those, but it severely restricts the number of targets you need.  Symbiosis also can't give any one creature more than +2/+2, so it may not save a creature from damage.  It can easily stay, but I just wanted to suggest some alternatives.

My next tweak-- Scion of the Wild?  First of all, it isn't a wolf, and second of all, what exactly are you sideboarding it in against?  I think that slot would be better used on some Privileged Position, or maybe a few Congregation at Dawn.  Or, since your deck uses quite a few enchantments, Sterling Grove.  Or possibly even Glare of Subdual or Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree.  All good options.

That should wrap things up.  I'm not really a Legacy expert, so I tried not to make too many huge changes, but hopefully my ideas will give you something to howl about at your next tournament.  Good luck!
