Deck Garage
Hi BMoor. First off, I just want to praise you on your deck garage. It gives me a lot of ideas for decks, one of which I am writing to you about and I hope that you could help me with it.
This deck is basically my sad attempt at an anti-creature/anti-white deck (Specifically: Rebels), using cards that I already have. Now, I figure that the Rebel killing can be put into a sideboard, but right now it is part of the main deck. I've played with it a few times, and I haven't won any matches yet, even against my friend's Black/White deck, which is what it is suppose to stop! So if you'll just take a look at the deck.... Land: 22 Swamp Creatures: 2 Blightspeaker 2 Knight of Stromgald 1 Infectious Host 1 Death's-head Buzzard 1 Mana Skimmer 1 Highway Robber Enchantments: 2 Pestilence 2 Gloom 1 Engineered Plague Instants: 3 Tendrils of Corruption 2 Cradle to Grave 2 Dash Hopes 2 Ghastly Demise 1 Simulacrum Sorceries: 2 Diabolic Tutor 2 Soul Feast 2 Innocent Blood 1 Stronghold Discipline 1 Stench of Evil 1 Drain Life 1 Persecute 1 Extinction 1 Syphon Soul 1 Inquisition 1 Endemic Plague 1 Plague Wind Total: 60 So, here are some of the problems I have had in the past: 1. Can't get/keep my enchantments out for long (countered and/or destroyed after a turn or 2) 2. Don't always get enough mana out 3. No real way to win the match (major problem) 4. Get walked on by creature decks (especially my friend's black/white Rebel deck, because he gets a lot of creatures out quick, and stomps my enchantments meant to slow him down into nothing) 5. Get walked on by really quick decks 6. Can't get around spell counters Now I know I have broken one of your cardinal rules: no single cards. But, in my defense, I didn't want to go out and buy more copies of the cards, and if you answered my email, they came out of the deck. Also, I am on a budget, sort of, and it would help if the cards were on the cheaper side...under $20 per card or less unless you really really feel it should be there, then I'll get it. This deck is for casual play only, so no restrictions on sets or anything. I don't care if you start over completely from scratch (might be easier for you); I only have 4 requirements for you, and they are: 1.That the deck is kept mono black, and if you want to add another color, red only; 2.That you please make an exact list of the cards the revised deck contains; 3.Please build a sideboard that will allow me to wipe my friend's black/white Rebel deck off the face of the planet! (with a list of cards I take out for the sideboard to come in, even just suggestions); 4.This deck be able to hold it's own in big multiplayer games AND in one-on-one duels. If all else fails, make it for multiplayer games, for the most part. Sorry about the specifying, I'm kind of obsessive compulsive about lists. Also, I don't really care if you feature this on your page (although that would be really cool), if all you do is send me an email about what I should do, even if it is to tell me to screw off and suck eggs or something, any indicator that you received this email would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read my email and I am leaving this in your very capable hands. If anybody can help me, it is you BMoor. -Jeremy I am sorry for taking so long to respond to your E-mail, Jeremy, but this one was difficult. Also, the past week or so have been very hectic in my life outside of Magic. At any rate, your problems are twofold. First, you're building your deck specifically as an anti-deck, designed to beat another specific deck (and thus leaving yourself open to any other kind of deck). And second, you don't really have any strong means of killing an opponent. First of all, any specific color-hosers can go in the sideboard. The exception here is Stromgald Crusader, who is fairly strong even against nonwhite opponents. Another pro: white creature you could add is Hand of Cruelty. Blightspeaker can also be removed. I don't know why you have him in here, but if you really want a Rebel in your deck, try Dunerider Outlaw or Deepcavern Imp. Next, if you want to keep creatures at bay, you'll need some good creature kill. Nekrataal is decent, and Shriekmaw is probably even better. Either one would also give you a strong attacker. Nightshade Assassin does the same thing, and works well with Deepcavern Imp if you add that. Yoru sorceries are legion and obscure, and instead of sorting through them all, I'll just suggest a new set of my own. If I suggest anything particularly similar to something you've already got, then feel free to just keep what you've got instead. Here's the deck as I would likely build it: Creatures: 4 Stromgald Crusader 4 Hand of Cruelty 4 Deepcavern Imp 3 Shriekmaw 3 Nekrataal 2 Plague Sliver 2 Woebringer Demon Spells: 3 Sword of Light and Shadow 4 Phyrexian Arena 3 Grave Pact 3 Death Denied 2 Profane Command Land: 23 Swamp In the sideboard, I'd add some white/Rebel hosers. Marauding Knight makes good white hate, and Engineered Plague makes good Rebel hate. Any "other spell" beyong Arena or the Sword could get sideboarded out in favor of these hosers. The main reasons I feel that my list solves your problems are A) it has some big creatures that can deliver the pain, B) it has Sword of Light and Shadow and Phyrexian Arena, and C) it has more than eight creatures, severely reducing the odds that you'll get stuck without a creature to play. I hope this has helped you. Good luck! ~BMoor
