Deck Garage
Before I begin today's deck fix, I just want to make a small announcement. Judging of decks will occur during this week, and I will have a series of articles showcasing several decks that best illustrate what I was looking for in the entries. The winner's prize is already in the process of being ordered, and I will get it in the mail probably at the end of the week. Thanks again to everyone who entered! Now, on to business.
Okay then, looks like a traditional Thallid/Saproling stall deck then. Now, you say that this deck is very slow. I'm not sure if that's meant as a complaint or your strategy, but I think speeding up this deck should help either way. Also, I'd like to inspect your selection of Thallids, as well as your support spells. Your deck is currently 62 cards, so let's start with what you can pull out.
First of all, you've got a lot of ways to sacrifice creatures. Fodder Cannon, Mind Slash, Drooling Groodion, Dread Return's buyback, and the list goes on. I understand what you're going for here-- generate a lot of Saprolings and sacrifice them for good effect. Well, the thing is that all Thallids (except the original) come with an ability that demands the sacrifice of a Saproling. So, all these extra cards may leave you hurting for more creatures, or at least running low on Saprolings in the face of a weenie rush. I'd take out those four cards-- to make room for some better ones.
What else do you have that you don't really need? Assassinate? There's better creature kill out there. Krosan Grip? Sundering Vitae? It's good to have ways to kill artifacts and enchantments, but these aren't as necessary as you think. You're better off with something that can do the job without being useless against a player who has no such permanents. Savra, Queen of the Golgari? A 2/2 that gains you some life when you sacrifice a Saproling? I guess that could be okay, but I've got my eye on her. Savage Thallid? A 5/2 for five mana? Juggernaut is a 5/3 for four mana, and that's even an artifact creature! Any color can have a 5/3 for four mana, even blue! Green is the king of big, efficient beaters! Green should be ashamed when this is the best it can do!
So what's the best that the Thallids can do? Sporesower Thallid. You're running two now, and that's good, but you need four. The ability gets even more powerful in multiples-- before you know, you'll have swarms and swarms of Saprolings. And as a 4/4 for four mana, it makes a great attacker, or a blocker that's hard to punch past. What else has the Thallid clan got to offer? After Sporesower, I'd say the best one is Shell-Dweller, which you've already got four of. Next is actually Pallid Mycoderm, a new White Thallid. I sort of want to suggest you drop black for white, actually-- that gives you access to all of Selesnya's tools for Saproling generation, like Selesnya Evangel and Vitu-Ghazi the City-Tree. Savra could come out in favor of Tolsimir Wolfblood, and maybe....
No. I'm not going to tear your deck apart to such a degree. It could be good, but the logistics would be too much to go into here, and besides, black can do something that white and green can't-- kill creatures effectively. That was Selesnya's one weakness: it could build up a huge army but it couldn't do anything about its opponent's army except to overwhelm it. If a creature doesn't block, Selesnya can't kill it. So that's what we'll leave black in to do. Sudden Death does that pretty well, as can Deathspore Thallid, but there's another card I'd like you to add in-- Putrefy. And black/green deck should have Putrefy really, it's just that good. It also takes the place of Sundering Vitae and Krosan Grip, although it can't deal with enchantments. For that job, if you need it, Nullmage Shepherd looks prety good.
That pretty much shores up this deck. There are other cards I can think of that will help, though. Psychotrope Thallid lets you play out your hand and then refill it if need be. Life and Limb could turn your lands into Saprolings, and your Saprolings into Forests (allowing them to tap for mana). And of course, there's always Coat of Arms.
Good luck!
