BMoor's Magic The Gathering Deck Garage
Oriss/Undertaker combo
June 4, 2007

Hi, im Michiel from Belgium, and i like your deck reviews real much, because
they often give me nice ideas for new decks.

This time, i saw a nice combo online, and i wanted to work it out as Time
Spiral block constructed deck.

I have some problems on my deck tough, and i hope you can solve them.
Well here it is, im not really on a budget (as you shall notice), so you can
give me any options you like:

Creatures (17):

2x Deep-sea kraken

3x Merieke Ri Berit
3x Oriss, Samite Guardian

3x Undertaker
3x Magus of the Future
3x Vedalken AEthermage

Spell's (19):

4x Ancestral Vision
4x Damnation
4x Second Wind
3x Mystic Speculation
4x Teferi's Moat

Land (24):

3x Gemstone Mine
4x Nimbus Maze
4x Terramorphic Expanse
3x Island
3x Swamp
2x Dreadship Reef
3x New Benalia
2x Calciform Pools

My strategy is to perform a combo with 2x Oriss, Undertaker and magus of the
future on the field. I keep getting an Oriss back to discard during my opp
upkeep, while Deepsea kraken is suspended or on the field to kill my opp
with it.

i try to keep opposing creatures back by using teferi"s moat and damnation
while i try to perform my combo, but the problem is that i lack a lot of
mana sometimes, or having the wrong card at the wrong time.
I hope you can help me out!

With big respect,

Michiel
I haven't sunk my teeth into a real combo deck like this in a while, if I remember correctly.  Undertaker and Oriss make a great tag team, keeping your opponent at bay.  And Deep-Sea Kraken is a superb finisher, since Oriss renders your opponent's creatures unable to attack but leaves them untapped and ready to block.

What's even more intriguing here is that Michiel is playing Block Constructed, a format I almost never get decks from.  It's a good thing I noticed that before going through all my original ideas (Transmute cards, Infernal Tutor, Pacifism, Trial//Error).  Block Constructed does limit us a bit more, but it's nothing we can't work around.  It also explains why you chose Damnation over Wrath of God.

Now, the first thing that raises questions here is Vedalken AEthermage.  You don't mention having problems with Slivers, and the only Wizard in your deck is Magus of the Future, who despite your insistence does not directly combo with Oriss and Undertaker.  Also, Oriss is white and Undertaker is black, yet the Magus has a triple-blue requirement.  I'd say both of these cards can come out in favor of something that won't put so much strain on your mana base.

You'll need white and black mana, but we'll keep blue in the deck simply for the capabilities it gives the deck.  Now, to reliably get an Undertaker and a pair of Oriss, how about replacing Magus of the Future with Magus of the Bazaar?  If you're wary of discarding so many cards, Bonded Fetch accomplishes a similar goal with less discarding (and less drawing).  The other important thing for a combo deck to be able to do is to search its library-- even if not for the combo piece.  Every card you gt out of your library increases your odds that the next draw will be the card you need.  For that reason, even Twisted Abomination has a place here for its Swampcycling ability.  You could do even better with Demonic Collusion.  You should also make room for Mystical Teachings, to find you

As for your noncreature spells, I like Ancestral Vision and Mystic Speculation a lot.  Teferi's Moat, not so much-- it only works on creatures of one color, and doesn't work on flying creatures.  Damnation is more thorough, but kills all your creatures.  And your combo is creature-based, so let's look for board control elsewhere.  Magus of the Tabernacle could be useful here, since all you really need are two creatures (plus the Magus, plus whatever you're winning with).  Some good old fashioned removal will work too: Temporal Isolation and Sunlance in white, Fledgling Mawcor and Psionic Blast in blue, and Ichor Slick, Dark Withering (hopefully Madnessed out through the Undertaker), or Sudden Death in black are all excellent choices.  Take your pick!  And don't worry about devoting too many slots to them; if you add in the Demonic Collusion, then you'll be able to run only a few copies of everything other than Oriss and Undertaker and then just search for it if necessary.  To say nothing of your capacity to draw three extra cards, filter your deck with Bonded Fetch/Magus of the Bazaar, and Scry 3 repeatedly.

And since we're including so many ways to filter your deck down to what you really need, why not throw in a copy of a card that will make your lock complete?  Oriss can shut down your opponent's spell-playing ability on their own turn, but what can stop them from playing spells during your turn?  One man can.  Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir.

Finally, the lands.  Too many storage lands here, and you need basic Islands and Plains if you want to use Nimbus Maze.  Also New Benalia isn't all that great.  Pull them out for some Islands, and maybe a Tolaria West or two for further deck-thining.

That should add some serious bite to your combo, Michiel.  Including a plethora of ways to root through your deck and get your combo online will speed up your games considerably.  Which is important, because once you do get online, the game will slow to a crawl as your opponent does nothing, and you wait for your Deep-Sea Kraken to unsuspend.  Good luck!
