Today, we hear from Jason, who would like some help with his red/white flying creatures deck:
I am currently using a red/white mostly flying deck and need advice on how it should be used and how it could be bettered (i.e. what cards should be taken out and what cards i should look to buy and put in). here is a rundown of the cards. Lands(25) Plains x12 Snow-Covered Mountains x13 Creatures(24) Dust Elemental x1 Pardic Dragon x1 Duskrider Peregrine x1 Skyknight Legionnaire x3 Stonecloaker x1 White Shield Crusader x1 Rimescale Dragon x1 Patron of the Kitsune x1 Wakestone Gargoyle x1 Boros Recruit x1 Flame-Kin Zealot x2 Skyhunter Patrol x1 Veteran Armorer x1 Cloudchaser Kestrel x2 Slith Firewalker x1 Castle Raptors x1 Stormfront Riders x1 Leonin Skyhunter x1 Instants/Sorceries(27) Shock x1 Lightning Helix x2 Sudden Shock x1 Dawn Charm x1 Pentarch Ward x1 Wojek Siren x2 Dead/Gone x1 Icefall x2 Glacial Plating x1 Seething Song x2 Volcanic Hammer x2 Rally the Righteous x3 Boros Fury Shield x1 Sunlance x1 Dragon Breath x1 Rift Bolt x1 Awe Strike x1 Assault/Battery x1 Fists of the Anvil x1 Skred x1 Thanks for taking the time to look at this and for helping me out if you can. Signed, Jason Well, Jason, thank YOU for writing in! I think we can help you out here. The first thing I notice when I look over this deck list is that you have 76 cards and a lot of one and two-ofs. This is not good. I'm going to bet you get pretty excited when you draw Rimescale Dragon. Currently, you have a 1 in 76 chance of drawing it in any given draw. Let's say you were able to get just one more dragon, and thin your deck down to 60 cards. You now have a 1 in 30 chance of drawing your dragon. Sure, you took out some good cards to get it down to 60, but you more than doubled your chance of drawing one of your best cards. So, let's start about the task of determining which cards in your deck are the best, and which ones don't quite carry their weight. This is done by two factors: What the card does, and how much it costs. Creatures that don't make the cut: - Stonecloaker: This card is also great with a bunch of creatures that have coming into play abilities. You don't have enough of them to take advantage of this ability. - Patron of the Kitsune: For 6 mana, you need more than a guy who will gain you a couple life during attack. By the time he's out and going, the attacks are going to be big enough that the couple life aren't going to make that much difference. Plus, he doesn't fly. - Wakestone Gargoyle: He's a defender. You need attackers that don't have to pay to attack. - Boros Recruit: Past about turn 2, he's going to be nothing more than a chump blocker. - Slith Firewalker: He just doesn't fit the theme - Castle Raptors: You can do better for 5 mana. - Stormfront Riders: Same thing again about the coming into play abilities. You'd rather keep your other creatures in play than have little 1/1's in play. - Veteran Armoer: This was a tough cut. I like the Armorer, but your deck is more aggressive by nature, and he doesn't fly. - Skyhunter Patrol: He's just a bit expensive for a 2 power flier. Other spells that don't make the cut: - Icefall: Land destruction is at it's best when it's the theme of the deck. This deck doesn't need it. - Seething Song: Two additional mana for one turn isn't worth the slot. - Awe Strike: Stopping one creature one time is too narrow - Assault/Battery: You're not running green, and the Assault side is strictly inferior to Shock because it's a sorcery. - Pentarch Ward: Just too expensive for what you get - Wojek Siren: It's just not strong enough, and it might pump up your opponent's creatures, too. - Volcanic Hammer: You've got a lot of damage cards, this one is just not quite as efficient as the others - Dawn Charm: It's a good card, but there are better, more aggressive options - Boros Fury Shield: Another good card, but for three mana, there are better options. Creatures you should get more of: - Dust Elemental: Even more than him being a 6/6 flier, he can save your creatures from a Wrath of God type effect. Grab a second if you can. - Skynight Legionnaire: He's terribly efficient. Pick up a fourth. - Leonin Skyhunter: Again, very efficient. Four of him as well. - Rimescale Dragon: Do I really need to explain why? But because of his high cost, you probably only want 2 total. - White Shield Crusader: Late game he gives you something to use your excess of white mana on. Perhaps 2 more of these. - Shock: While it's efficient at one mana, I think we need a little more power. - Sudden Shock: Split Second is nice, but not enough power here. Other spells you should get more of: - Lightning Helix: Deal three damage AND gain 3 life for 2 mana? Give me four. - Skred: Most of the time this card reads: Tap one red mana to kill target creature. If you're playing red and snow lands, you want 4. And when you're playing cards that get a benefit from snow (Rimescale Dragon, Skred), there's no reason not to play all snow lands. Let's make it 11 Snow Covered Plains and 10 Snow Covered Mountains, because a lot of your early creatures (Skyhunter, Crusader, Kestrel) take double white, so we want to make sure we can get that. To fill out the last land spot, I recommend Scrying Sheets. Anytime at the end of your opponent's turn, if you still have mana open, you might as well see if you can draw an extra card! So, based upon what I've done here, this is what we've got now: Lands(25) Plains x12 Snow-Covered Mountains x13 Creatures(21) Leonin Skyhunter x4 White Shield Crusader x3 Skyknight Legionnaire x4 Cloudchaser Kestrel x2 Dust Elemental x2 Flame-Kin Zealot x2 Pardic Dragon x1 Duskrider Peregrine x1 Rimescale Dragon x2 Instants/Sorceries(17) Lightning Helix x4 Dead/Gone x1 Glacial Plating x1 Rally the Righteous x3 Sunlance x1 Dragon Breath x1 Rift Bolt x1 Fists of the Anvil x1 Skred x4 There are any number of other good flying creatures you could put in if you can come up with some, but I think your current selection will work as well as most of them. Have fun flying over your opponent! mattedesa
