Mattedesa's Deck Garage
Morph Deck
May 14, 2007

Hi mattedesa!! Im a relatively new magic player, playing for a year so far, and it has always been a pleasure for me to try and build a deck that can be very fun and ''works'' at the same time. Unfortunately, from my experience so far, those two things dont usually go together.
So i present to you my morph deck, and you see if u can help me make it better:

20x Islands

Creatures

4x Dream Stalker
4x Aquamorph Entity
4x Shaper Parasite
3x Merfolk Thaumaturgist
3x Coral Trikster
3x Crookclaw Transmuter
2x Serendib Sorceror
2x Willbender

Enchantments:

4x Reality Acid
4x Unstable Mutation

Instants:
4x Ovinize
3x Piracy Charm

The basic idea, a pretty simple one, is to win by dabbling with my creatures */* statistics and win by beating them in big hits. People usually dont block a 1/5 Aquamorph Entity, and they get suprised by a 5/1 attacker with the help of Crookclaw Transmuter. The Merfolk is the most key card, he flips the */* creature stats, or he can kill and ovinized or ''serendibized'' creature by making it 1/0 or 2/0. Reality Acid is a reusable kill card with Dreamstalker, Now as good as this may sound, it doesnt work that way in reality :(. I get beaten badly by burn/aggro decks, because my deck is just too slow. I always need to morph to get a benefit from my creatures, and that gives my opponent enough time to kill/get ready for anything that might come his way. I can only start really playing at turn four/five, so aggro beats me bad. Ive thought adding some Viscerid Deepwalkers as a turn one suspend, and some Deep Sea Krakens as a big threat. Please pay in mind that my budget is currently very low, and these are basicly all the cards that i have at the moment. I really want this deck to be T2 legal (and effective, at least a bit), if not, i wouldnt mind any other suggestions (old morph cards, spells etc.).
Thats all i can think about at the moment, im looking foward to see what can you do with this deck, and please dont mind my not so good english, its not my native language.

Thx in advance, and keep up the good work,

Filip

Well, thanks, Filip, for sending in your deck. That's too bad that you don't thing fun and making a deck "work" can go together. Morph is a fun mechanic, especially when you have a bunch of them! It really leaves your opponent guessing what's going on! I like your tricks, also, of switching power and toughness. You've got a good starting place for an excellent deck.

The problems you mentioned having were wi
th fast burn/aggro decks. I plan to address that as well as hopefully make your deck a little more effective at the same time. To deal with quick attacks, I would recommend playing 3 Mana Leaks to counter early spells and 4 Boomerangs to catch things that your counterspells don't. Later in the game the Boomerangs can also be used on your own creatures to reuse their coming into play abilities. To make room for these additions, let's take out Unstable Mutation (only good in aggressive decks) and Piracy Charm (not quite strong enough).

Now that we've dealt a little with your problems against aggro decks, let's work a little on making your deck work a little better with itself. The first creature I'd like to see you add is Fledgling Mawcor. The ability to deal one damage repeatedly is always useful.
His morph cost of 2 blue is certainly reasonable, and he's a flier on top of that. Also, you can play him straight up without morphing without missing out on his benefit! Let's drop Coral Trickster - although he can be fun and useful - in favor of 3 Mawcors.

The next one you might consider is Brine Elemental. He could play the part of your finisher. If you can catch your opponent all tapped out, Briney can make them pay. 2 of him should be enough. You could drop 1 Reality Acid and 1 Ovinize to fit him in, but you might experiment with that.

So far, I've kept my suggestions to only commons and uncommons, but I cannot talk about a morph deck without mentioning a couple choice rares. The first is Vesuvan Shapeshifter. Whenever he unmorphs, he can copy any creature on the board, allowing you to constantly reuse your other creatures unmorphing abilities. The second is Ixidron. This guy would serve several purposes. First, he morphs all other creatures, making all your opponents creatures 2/2's with no abilities (unless they can morph). Second, he allows you to re-use your creatures unmorphing abilities, and third, he has the potential to become a huge creature himself! If you are able to come up with any copies of either of these, I would take out whatever you have to to make room!

Without the aforementioned rares, here's a possible new build for your deck:

20x Islands

Creatures:
4x Dream Stalker
4x Aquamorph Entity
4x Shaper Parasite
3x Merfolk Thaumaturgist
3x Coral Trikster
3x Crookclaw Transmuter
2x Serendib Sorceror
2x Willbender

Enchantments:
4x Reality Acid

Instants:
4x Ovinize
4x Boomerang
3x Mana Leak

There are a number of other cards that would fit with this deck that you might experiment with - the above are just my first impression of what would be the best. Here are a few that might be good candidates if you keep having trouble:

Gathan Raiders - Yes, he's red, but you can play him morphed and turn him over by only discarding a card, so you never need any red mana.
People don't expect you to be able to unmorph your creatures when all your lands are tapped! If you find yourself often with no cards in hand, the Raiders would be an EXCELLENT choice since he becomes a 5/5.

Unblinking Bleb - Since you're going to be turning over so many creatures, the Bleb would give you a lot of chances to scry and find the cards you need.

Zoetic Cavern - Yes, a morphing land. The trick here is to attack or block with him, let the damage stack, then morph him into a land before he would die. Lands can't die to damage, so your opponent's creature takes two damage, and you have an extra land to help you accelerate into your more expensive cards.

Filip, I hope that helps. It's good to see newer players enjoying the game. Keep playing and let me know how things turn out!
