v0rac10u5’s Deck Garage
Welcome to the Jungle
January 14, 2008

Hey v0rac,

Seeing as I’m relatively new to the game (okay, I’ve been at it about 3 weeks) and you’re opening a new garage, I felt it wholly necessary to send you my casual deck for consideration.

My Power Overwhelming deck is perfect for me because I started it out as a green deck going perfectly with a playstyle I’ve carried over from other games of turtling until I have enough mana to lay waste with my summons and it’s gradually coming into its own.  Now, I’m in the process of making several tweaks since this thing is far from being ready for use in a serious setting.  Before going into specifics, here’s my deck:

Land

20 Forest

Creatures - 27

2x Garruk Wildspeaker

3x Llanowar Elves

1x Vigor

2x Changeling Titan

2x Cloudthresher

2x Avatar of Might

2x Rushwood Elemental

3x Thorn Elemental

1x Thicket Elemental

1x Chlorophant

4x Yavimaya Elder

2x Brawn

2x Rhox

Non-Creatures - 13

1x Primal Command

2x Bifurcate

2x Fog

2x Blanchwood Armor

1x Rite of Passage

2x Overgrowth

2x Fertile Growth

1x Dolmen Gate

Okay, well first and foremost, this is almost entirely based around cards I currently own in the handful of packs, the one pre-con deck, and a smattering of ebay bidding.  Most of this is subject to change, though if I can keep Cloudthresher in, I would very much like to.  As for cards I’m not wholeheartedly attached to over some of the others, I’d probably say Changeling Titan and Fog as neither has really made a huge impact thus far in the 10 or so games I’ve played with the deck.

Anyways, onto the strategy.  The basic principle of this deck is to go for the land early and make up for the high cost of most of my creatures by getting either the Fertile Growth/Overgrowths into play beefing up my mana to where by fourth turn, I’m pushing 6 land.  Brawn was thrown in either as a first turn discard or as a universal blocker to force the trample.  Through the use of Fog as well as the Rite of Passage, I can try to make up for the lack of first through third turn threats by deterring attacks. Ultimately, what is really made obvious by my choices is that I really like getting a horde of creatures out relatively quickly that will overwhelm anyone’s defenses.

Rather obviously, my biggest weakness with this deck is its speed.  While in a 3-4 person game, I come across as not being much of a threat early and generally get ignored for the powerhouses, in a one-on-one, the absolute lack of speed decimates this deck.  The main changes I was considering was a replacement of Bramble Elemental in favor of the more burly Rushwood Elemental.  One of the big problems with building it in the first place is having a little of everything that catches my eye, again, the joys of being new to the game, and I never know which ones are worth stocking over the others.  However, unsurprisingly, it also has been torn apart by counter-spell sorcery.

Due to my lack of cards, the deck is severely lacking and while I’m learning the different cards as I go, I don’t have nearly the depth of the older cards that will help this deck more beyond those that have been recommended to me such as the Defense of the Heart/Pattern of Rebirth combo as well as the Bifurcate (neither of which I’ve been able to try as those are not in my possession yet…the same goes for the Yavimaya Elders).

Thanks kindly,

Ralnakor

For a new player, you seem to have a very good grasp on the game. You’ve already pointed out almost everything I was going to comment on.

As you’ve mentioned, this deck needs two things very badly. The first is speed. You can increase the decks speed in two ways. First, you can add some mana acceleration. You already have some mana acceleration elements, but I would switch your enchantments for more elves. They essentially accomplish the same purpose but the elves can attack and block later in the game when you no longer need the mana. The second way is to play cheaper casting cost cards. This way you can play threats during your first few turns rather than try to stall.

The second thing this deck needs is focus and consistency. Try playing four of the most important cards. I know this is difficult with a limited card pool, so I will try to suggest cheaper cards that you should be able to find easily.

Welcome to the Jungle.dec v1.1

28/12/20

4 Llanowar Elves

4 Fyndhorn Elves

4 Wild Mongrel

4 Kavu Titan

4 Yavimaya Elder

4 Blastoderm

4 Cloudthresher

4 Pulse of the Tangle

4 Harmonize

4 Garruk Wildspeaker

4 Treetop Village

16 Forest

The elves provide acceleration in the early game and can attack later in the game. Wild Mongrel is a great and cheap early-game drop. Kavu Titan can function as an early drop and as a late game threat because of its optional kicker. Yavimaya Elder is great card advantage. Blastoderm and Cloudthresher are both great late-game threats. Pulse of the Tangle and Harmonize both provide card advantage. Garruk Wildspeaker does pretty much everything. This deck should be much faster and harder for your opponents to handle. And if counterspell/control decks continue to give you problems, try uncounterable creatures like Blurred Mongoose, Kavu Chameleon, and Scragnoth.
