Now if only some readers would sent more decks to me! Ahem, this is my next deck, which, interestingly enough, Mattedessa also did it seems, however, my take on it is a bit different from his and I think both perspectives will be useful/informative to the readers and the author of the deck. Anyway, here's what you can put up:
Hey Sean,
Before I tell you the bad points let me shine some light on the deck =)
The deck I am currently using works quite well but needs professional help. With this deck you can win in two ways 1) decking out the opponent 2) killing them with a 20+ creature with flying. The combo consists of a Vulturous Zombie (gets +1/+1 for each card in opponents graveyard since it was played) which you pump up with a glimpse the unthinkable (+10) or a traumatize (+ a lot) this allows you to win with a 20+ creature that has flying, if the creature doesn’t work you could always just deck them out.
What I love about this deck is that even if you run out of important cards later on in the game (Glimpse the unthinkable/Traumatize) you can always use Dralnu, Lich Lord to flashback all the glimpses in your graveyard and win the game. The thing about this deck is that even if you don’t get the cards you need (Glimpse, Vulturous Zombie or Dralnu) you can transmute a Dimir Infiltrator (useful even if not transmuted) to obtain a glimpses the unthinkable or transmute a Brainspoil (also useful) to obtain either the combo card Vulturous Zombie, Dralnu, Lich Lord or Traumatize. There are only 20 lands in the deck however to obtain more lands there are Birds of Paradise, Elves of Deep Shadow, Farseek and artifacts such as Dimir Signet, Golgari Signet, and Simic Signet. I believe that only 20 lands work out fine because if you add them all up you can have a combination of 10 swamps, 10 islands, and 10 forests, not including the artifacts and spells. The Darkness
The problems I face is that it loses to decks which are too fast such as a goblin deck, occasionally a burn deck will whip my ass as well. I believe that there are a couple of cards in my deck which are just useless and need to be replaced however I don’t know which ones.
I usually go through a couple of games with out ever needing cards such as sudden spoiling or Plaxcaster Frogling (its ability) Also I've been wondering if Twincast would be useful to add into the deck but never had the chance to try it out. Thanks for taking your time to read my babble and if there is anything you can help me with to improve this deck I would greatly appreciate it. Hello there, my apologies for such a late reply to this deck, but I’ve had some rather complicated life things absorbing my attention for a while. I can see that Mattedessa also fixed this deck; however, I have my own take on it that I think can be equally as valuable to our friend here.
The deck revolves around using milling spells to make Vulturous Zombie into a lethal beater, a very effective combination in my opinion. So let’s jump right in and examine the creature base and see what we can do. Obviously the 4 Vulturous Zombies are good, as are the Birds of Paradise which constitute fairly sweet mana acceleration/smoothing. Dimir Infiltrator is an ok card, since he tutors for Glimpse and several other cards. I personally like Elves of Deep Shadow, even though they hurt you, because very few things can tap for black mana. And then there was Dralnu. I understand what you want to do with him, however, he’s a very risky card outside of a deck built around him (Dralnu de Louvre for example), and I think that there is a better way for you to recur your Glimpses and other spells without risking losing a bit chunk of your permanents, which I will address when we move into the spell portion of your deck. So I’d recommend you pull him from the deck and instead increase the Elves of Deep Shadow to a full 4, that way you can more reliably draw the black mana tapping elves. And as for Plaxcaster Frogling, it’s ability is useful, but a single copy just isn’t really worth it, that and we don’t want to put the added stress of another multicolored spell in a deck that already has several, not to mention double colored casting costs, so out it comes as well.
Now that we’ve covered the critters, let’s take a look at the spells of the deck. Traumatize is a bit of a tricky card, what with it’s UU casting cost, however, it is tutorable with Brainspoil, and it can really put your opponent within decking range or make your Vulturous Zombie ridiculously enormous, so I think it can stay. I was a little conflicted over Farseek, since it basically lets you pick whatever land you want out of your deck, but on the other hand, I couldn’t really think of anything else to take out for the card I recommend you putting in to replace the recurring effect of Dralnu. The card I’m talking about is of course, Recollect. This little 2G sorcery lets you add any card from your graveyard to your hand, which means you can get more mileage out of those very delicious Glimpses. Brainspoil is good for the aforementioned Transmute ability, and its capacity as a removal spell, and Putrefy is so good that I’d recommend upping the count to a solid 4. The same is true with Compulsive Research, even though it can cost you a land, it provides and excellent way to dig into your deck, and if you discard anything you want, you can always pull it back with Recollect, so I’d recommend increasing its count to 4. Glimpse the Unthinkable is a personal favorite of mine, and it’s central to the decks goal, so it’s fine. Diabolic Tutor and Sudden Spoiling seem a little out of place in this deck. The Tutor is 2BB, but let’s you get any card without your opponent knowing what it is, however, it seems like it might be a bit unnecessary what with all the other tutoring effects, card drawing, and mana acceleration. And as for the Spoiling, that’s really more of a card for a deck that can annihilate all of its opponent’s creatures immediately after it resolves, so it can come out as well. As for the Signets, I’d recommend dropping the Simic Signet and upping the number of Dimir and Golgari signets by 1 each.
And now we come to the land portion of the deck. I’d like to make two things clear; 1) I’m not an expert on mana bases and 2) All I have to say is WOW when I see all those shock lands, that’s a pretty flexible selection of land. Unless my math is very, very wrong, you actually have 18 lands in your deck, and 20 is really the minimum you’ll need, so we’ll fix that. Anyway, from what I can see, I think it’d be best to take out the Yavimaya Coast, you don’t really want to be hemorrhaging from all the damage from tapping for colored mana, and it seems a bit excessive when you look at all the other options you have. Instead, I’d just up the count of your Swamp and Island by 2 each, since your deck tends to lean a little heavier in those colors directions.
So, at last my anonymous friend, I present to you my version of your deck:
Vulturous Drain v2
Creatures (16)
4x Vulturous Zombie 4x Birds of Paradise 4x Dimir Infiltrator 4x Elves of Deep Shadow Other Spells (24) 4x Glimpse the Unthinkable
4x Recollect
4x Compulsive Research 4x Putrefy 2x Brainspoil 2x Traumatize 2x Dimir Signet 2x Golgari Signet Lands (20) 2x Forest 4x Swamp 4x Island 2x Underground River 2x Llanowar Wastes 2x Breeding Pool 2x Watery Grave 2x Overgrown Tomb
Well, I hope this has been as useful for you as my fellow Deck Mechanics advice was. Until next time, may all your duels end with your opponent’s library at zero, or with you swinging away with a 23/23 Vulturous Zombie!
