Judge's Corner

Worship Pains

Short Answers:

-Creatures have summoning sickness unless they have been under your continuous control since you last started a turn.

-All damage during the normal damage dealing step is dealt at the same time. So there is no way to both have you Krosan Beast deal damage and save it with a Moment's Peace (assuming it is being blocked by creatures with enough power to kill the Krosan Beast).

---

Long Answers:

Q: If a player controls Worship (which "reduces" damage), would Flaring Pain cause that player to die if lethal damage was on the stack?

-tchurrle

A: Worship does not prevent damage - it changes the adjustment of the player's life total after the damage is dealt. So the damage is dealt, and that player's life total is adjusted to 1. So Flaring Pain will not kill the Worship player.

---

So a couple of more situations with Worship that may come up in a game:

-If you attack with a (face up) Exalted Angel, and the defending player controls a Worship and a creature, and is at 1, you will gain 4 life. The damage is dealt, and the player's life total is adjusted by Worship to 1.

-If you attack the same player with a Hypnotic Specter, he will be forced to discard a card at random.

---

Q: I've been playing magic for a while but my friends and I still have a heated discussion about "the end of turn". Is it the end of the turn when the I say go and the next player starts their turn, or when I say go, they finish their turn, and then they say I can go.

-korne89

A: A player's turn ends when both players pass priority in the end step of the active player's turn.

---

Q: In the card Elven Riders that was reprinted in Onslaught, I noticed the creature type had been changed from Riders to Elf. I own the Legends version of the card where the creature type is Riders. If I played the Legends version in a game, would the creature type count as Riders as it says or Elf as it was reprinted?

-LEHRVM

A: It would be an elf.

---

Q: If I have a Divine Sacrament and Kavu Lair in play with threshold and I play White Knight, do I draw a card?

A: Yes. The White Knight will be 4/4 when it enters play, and the Kavu Lair will trigger.

---

Q: If I have a Kavu Lair out and I play a Krosan Beast while I have threshold, do I draw a card?

A: Yes.

---

Q: If I have a Shared Triumph naming Soldiers and my opponent has an Engineered Plague where he also named Soldiers, if I play a 1/1 Soldier, does it die? DO the two abilities negate each other immediately or do they stack?

A: You apply both abilities at the same time, so they negate each other.

---

Q: If there is a Humility out and I play a face down creature, can I morph it?

-PyroFreak2015

A: From Paul Barclay's article on morph: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/feature/87):

Does a face-down creature have the “morph” ability?

Face-down creatures don't have any abilities, so they aren't considered to have the morph ability. They just have an effect on them that allows you to pay their morph cost to turn them face up. Face-up creatures with morph do have the ability.

So if you play a creature face down with a Humility out, it will be a 1/1 with no abilities, and you can turn it face up for its morph cost. If you do, it will still be a 1/1 with no abilities.

---

Q: Assume I have any creature, let's say Llanowar Elves, and it's enchanted with say, Blanchwood Armor. If my opponent (or me, doesn't matter) plays Steely Resolve (naming elf), will the enchantment (Blanchwood Armor) fall off?

A: No. Local enchantment cards only target when they are being played (cast). They don't target at any other time.

---

Q: Can I enchant the elves with something else now?

A: No. (Mantra 3, footnote D).

---

Q: Does Circular Logic count itself when you pay it's madness cost? Like if I have no cards in grave, and I discard to a 'tog and pay the madness cost, does it see itself in the grave and make them pay one, or not and pay zero?

-gam0vr

A: Circular Logic doesn't count itself, since it isn't in the graveyard until it finishes resolving.

---

Q: I have Aluren, x2 Soul Warden, Words of Wilding, Carnival of Souls, and a Wirewood Savage on the table and a Cavern Harpy in my hand. Can I play the Cavern Harpy, stack the life gain first, then the card drawing form the Savage, then last stack on the triggered ability of carnival of souls and be able to create a 2/2 bear from the words instead of drawing a card from the savage. Is this possible or would I have to stack the abilities a different way in order to perform an infinite loop of 2/2 bears?

-Elijiah S.

A: As long as you are at 2 or more life, this is fine, since the Carnival resolves first, making you lose a life.

The optimal stack would be: Savage first, Carnival next, and life gain last. That way, you gain the life before you lose it.

(Note: I know, the gating ability has to be in there somewhere. Put it wherever you want, cause it doesn't matter.)

---

Q: My friend and I were wondering the rules for the Ensnaring Bridge card, the text is "Creatures with power greater than the number of cards in your hand can't attack" Does that mean if I have no cards in my hand that no creature can attack me?

-MysticGohan

A: No. This means that no creature with a power greater than 0 can attack you. A Birds of Paradise could still attack you, for example (Might of Oaks, anyone?).

---

Q: Using Hunting Grounds or Elvish Piper, do I have to play a creature with morph ability face up, or can I play it morphed?

-Michael J.

A: You have to put the creature into play face up. The morph ability only allows you to play creatures face down. Since, with Hunting Grounds and Elvish Piper, you aren't playing the creatures, but rather putting them into play, you can't use the morph ability.

---

Q: If you have a Mirari's Wake in play, would you get more mana from filter lands or would you only get the 2 mana that it produces? For example: a red and green from Mossfire Valley...

-Bob

A: If you use a filter land with Mirari's Wake out, you would get one more mana of any type it produces. So, for a Mossfire Valley, you would either get two red and one green, or two green and one red, your choice.

---

Q: Does Soulless One's (or any of those other tribal (Whatever)less Ones) power and toughness stay fixated at what it was when it came into play, or does it change when a Zombie comes into or is removed from play?

A: The "-less Ones'" power constantly changes, depending on how many creatures of that type are in play at any given time (and, for the case of Soulless One, how many zombies are in the graveyard).

---

Q: Does Soulless One count itself as a Zombie to determine its power and toughness?

A: Yes. Since Soulless One is a Zombie, it will count itself.

---

Q: Can you play Innocent Blood if you have no creatures?

A: Yes.

---

Q: Can you cycle on your opponent's turn?

-RabidCat

A: Yes. You can cycle a card with cycling any time you have priority.

---

Q: How can I deal with a player that will just harass his opponent during middle of the game, and the Judge wasn't here? When the Judge arrived, he won't admit he harassed the player.

-Bahamut O.

A: Request the judge's presence for the remainder of the match. Any judge worth his salt, given the ability to stay there (for example, if he isn't the only judge there, or doesn't have other things he needs to attend to), will do so.

Tournament Report - FNM - Diamond Bar, CA

Time for a change. I'm sick of the auto-loss to Marshall, and so I break out ...

Glide

4 Exalted Angel

4 Teroh's Faithful

4 Astral Slide

4 Lighting Rift

4 Slice and Dice

2 Starstorm

4 Wrath of God

4 Lay Waste

4 Renewed Faith

4 Secluded Steppe

4 Forgotten Caves

9 Plains

9 Mountains

SB:

4 Sacred Ground (Hi, Sugrim!)

3 Circle of Protection: Green (Beasts and U/G)

3 Auramancer (any deck with white or green [Disenchant/Naturalize])

3 Aven Cloudchaser (Mirror, or any other deck with an annoying enchantment)

2 Morningtide (Tog, U/G, any thing else that takes advantage of the graveyard)

Round 1 - Alex V. - B/W Clerics

Game 1 - I mulligan once before we start. I Wrath away his early guys, get the quick Slide + Angel combination, and just start the beat down. I end up at 39.

Sideboard: In: 2 Morningtide. Out: Exalted Angel, Teroh's Faithful

Game 2 - He mulligans this game, and gets the early beatdown. I Wrath, and get a couple of Rifts out. Unfortunately, I get no cycling cards for 6 turns, and he runs me over.

Sideboard: In: 1 Auramancer, 1 Aven Cloudchaser. Out: Slice and Dice, Wrath of God.

Game 3 - We both keep our 7 this time. I get the Rift and Slide this game, but again suffer from a pocket of no cycling cards, and fall.

Games: 1-2, Matches: 0-1.

Round 2 - Walter S. - Sligh

Game 1 - Sigh. I'm playing up this round, as Walter won. I keep a hand with 2 Plains and a Steppe, and don't see either a red land (for the Rift) or a fourth white land (for the Wrath), and he runs me over with Raging Goblin + double Charge, with the kitty for the kill shot.

Sideboard: Nothing.

Game 2 - I get the early Rift, along with plenty of cycling cards, and after I take control of the board (following Raging + double Charge again), he scoops, as I am at 12.

Game 3 - A nervous start (yes, I shuffled his deck, but he gets the lucky Raging + double Charge start again), but a cycled Slice and Dice helps stave off the early beats, and I pull the Rift to take control. He tries to Hammer me out, but I hard cast Renewed Faith, and after I drop a Teroh's Faithful with a Slide out, I Rift him out.

Games: 3-3, Matches: 1-1.

Round 3 - James F. - Clerics

Game 1 - He bemoans the fact that he has to play me, after the quality opposition he had in the first two rounds. He still thinks I'm playing Tog, Until I drop turn 1 Plains, and cycle a Secluded Steppe at end of his turn. He gets the early zombies, along with a Rotlung. I am able to Wrath to take out the first set, but he attacks with the Rotlung tokens and Gempalm Polluter's me out.

Sideboard: Nothing this game.

Game 2 - I get the early Slide/Faithful recursion, and he drops 2x Megrim. I go into block and slide mode, to negate the Megrim, and then I drop a second Slide to go with my second Faithful. I eventually get the Rift and Rift him out along with Sliding into higher life.

Sideboard: In: 3 Aven Cloudchaser. Out: Exalted Angel, Teroh's Faithful, Starstorm.

Game 3 - He gets the early Megrim, but my Cloudchaser takes care of it. An Exalted Angel negates him attacking for 4 each turn, and I slowly whittle his life total down to 0.

Games: 5-4, Matches: 2-1

Round 4 - Ben H. - W/G beasts

Game 1 - I don't get a Wrath. That's about all I need to say.

Sideboard: In: 3 Auramancer, 3 Circle of Protection: Green. Out: 2 Starstorm, Slice and Dice, Lightning Rift, Lay Waste, Teroh's Faithful.

Game 2 - We both get the early Exalted Angels. Problem is, I get 3 of them to his 1. A Rift and Circle also turn this game to my favor.

Game 3 - We both get double Exalted Angel early this game. I also get my 3 Auramancers, to recur the Circles and Slides that he destroys. I finally Slide out 2 Angels and an Auramancer during his end step, untap, and Wrath. His ground force builds back up, but his air force does not.

Games: 7-5, Matches: 3-1

There are two people at 10+ points, and they draw. There are only 2 of us at 9 points, but there are 3 at 7 points, and our tiebreaks suck, so we have to play.

Round 5 - Michael N. - MBC

Game 1 - I win the roll, get turn 2 Rift, turn 3 Slide, turn 4 Angel. Next...

Sideboard: Nothing.

Game 2 - He gets the nuts draw, and turn 5 Sludge, turn 6 Tutor for the Echoes, turn 7 Echoes. I scoop to the Echoes.

Game 3 - I get absolutely no pressure early, and he Tutors turn 7, and Sludge + Echoes me out of the tournament turn 8, as I have a Faithful and an Angel in the grave when he Echoes.

Games: 8-7, Matches: 3-2

See you Thursday.
