US Magic: The Gathering Player
Wins $40,000, Pro Title
February 13, 2007
Mike Hron,
Madison, Wis., brings home the trophy from Geneva gaming tournament
WHAT: Gaming icon Wizards of the Coast announced Mike Hron the winner of its
Magic: The Gathering professional tournament (Pro Tour) in Geneva. After a
heated final match, judges awarded Hron with $40,000, the Pro Title and the
first place trophy. Since 1996, Wizards of the Coast has given away more
than $28 million in Magic: The Gathering prize money.
Hron’s win against renowned Japanese player Takuya Osawa marks the first
time in more than six years that an American player has won a Magic: The
Gathering Limited Pro Tour. Making the “Top 8” of a Pro Tour is the dream of
any competitive Magic player, but winning it all is something to cherish.
Professional players, those who participate in organized play, are often
ranked by the number of Top 8's they've made during their career—this is
Hron’s first.
The Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour is the highest form of competitive play
for the collectible trading card game. It is a series of high payout
tournaments held throughout the world and run by the Wizards of the Coast
"Organized Play" section, culminating in the Magic World Championships each
year. The next World Championship is scheduled to be held in New York City
in December 2007.
