Andre Coimbra Takes Home Magic: The Gathering World Championship in Rome, Italy

 

This past weekend, the best Magic: The Gathering players in the world rallied in Rome, Italy for the premiere 2009 World Championship event. Four hundred and eight players representing more than 50 countries competed in head-to-head battles for four days at Worlds - Rome until Andre Coimbra from Portugal prevailed with the coveted World Champion title.  

 

Additionally, China reigned in the World Team Championship, which included players Bo Li, Wu Tong, and Zhiyang Zhang. Wizards of the Coast also honored Yuuya Watanabe from Japan with the Magic Player of the Year award and inducted three players into the Hall of Fame, rewarding their success in the Magic Pro Tour.

 

The top eight players to round out the 2009 World Championships in Rome included:

 

  1. Coimbra, Andre from Coimbra, Portugal
  2. Reitbauer, David from Vienna, Austria
  3. Cavaglieri, William from Brescia, Italy
  4. Soh, Terry from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  5. Bucher, Manuel from Luzern, Switzerland
  6. Lybaert, Marijn from Oilsjt, Belgium
  7. Snepvangers, Bram from Houten, Netherlands
  8. Pils, Florian from Munich, Germany

 

 

Since 1996, Wizards of the Coast has given away more than $30 million in prize money, which includes both cash prizes and scholarship awards.

 

In addition to the main competition, Magic fans of all ages and skill levels enjoyed the extensive public event schedule and the opportunities to meet with members of the Magic art and R&D teams.

 

The Magic Pro Tour is the highest form of competitive play for the collectible trading card game. It is a series of high payout tournaments held throughout the world and run by the Wizards of the Coast "Organized Play" division. Next stop on the professional circuit is Pro Tour San Diego in February 2010.
