Whats in a Theme - Kevin Bryant
Date: Mon, 4 Jul 2005 16:36:00 +0100
What in a Theme?
Into
Hi my name is Kevin and im 28 and live in Liverpool. I run a
Zombie Deck (since MRD all the way to now), a Machine
XYZ/Union Deck and a Clown/Burn Deck. Ive been playing Yu Gi
Oh for about 4 years, and I would have been World Champion
if I didn't have such rotten luck with the cards when it
really matters :-(
Background
#This is just so you will understand where all this came
from.#
The other day I was having a few friendly duels with some
mates I made from my local club - plug "impact games" - and
we were talking about what cards are broken and combos and
all the usual stuff. When I said about a game id had the
week before when id used my Zombies and had my opponent
against the wall - he had nothing on the field, one card in
hand and I had 4 monsters and 2 bluff set M/T cards and he
pulls Tribe and cleans the field and pulls off a comeback
only Yugi can do. This was the reason why I said that Tribe
kills themed decks and now it's a common in a starter set!!!
After I said this one of the people there who was looking at
my Machine Deck turned round and said my Deck wasn't a
Themed Deck anyway cause it wasn't all Machines (2 Shinning
Angels, Sangan and D.D. Warrior Lady).
In his view a Themed Deck should only be of one type and one
type only.
This caused the comeback of what about certain support cards
like Lord of D and Castle of Dark Illusion both of which
help a deck type but isn't of the same type it helps. His
response was that you could use them but the deck still
wouldn't be a pure theme!!
The Point
His view is true to a point, how many decks have we all seen
where a Deck is just all the hardest cards with no link
together i.e Berserk Gorilla - Beast, Magician of Faith -
Spellcaster, Tribe - Aqua, Jinzo - Machine, Vampire Lord -
Zombie etc etc. Not only monsters what about Traps and
Magic? Would Fairies have a Theatening Roar? Would a Water
Deck use Lightning Vortex? Im not saying that this is wrong
the game allows all this but one of the points that was
brought up by this line of thought is how, if from the start
the Big/Staple cards had had restrictions such like Dark
Magic Attack and White Lightning. Then the Theme of a deck
would have a much bigger effect. Imagine only Spellcasters
could have Magical Cylinder, Water Decks have Tribe, Fiends
have Sangan, Machines have Jinzo, Beasts have Gorilla, Wind
have Heavy Storm?
Im not saying take all the cards in the whole game and
grouping them, but by doing this, when you duel someone each
person will have totally different cards to each other
rather than 90-95% the same. Some Decks are like this
already to a point - Gravekeeper and Toon but even these
will have the Staple cards in them.
Very few of us will ever be World Champion so the only
reason we should be playing this game is for fun and the
challenge, one of the biggest challenges you can do with
this game and many other card games like this is to stick
with one theme and work on just that. Ok it will have
weaknesses but on the other hand by focusing on just that
theme you will have room for very good specialist cards for
that type - book of life/limiter removal for example which
give you bonuses elsewhere. This in the long term is much
more satisfying than going for the quick fix of adding a non
themed cards just for its effect.
Ive seen decks posted on sites that claim, for example, to
be a Zombie Deck just cause it has Vampire Lord, Spirit
Reaper and 2 Pyramid Turtles, that's 4 monsters out of 18,
to me that is not a Zombie Deck, (if you must know my
Zombies have 18 monsters 15 of which are Zombies, I would
have all Zombies but since everyone else has mixed decks to
a point it is nice to win now and then)
Maybe im sounding sort of old fashion but the purity of a
deck is a very good a rewarding challenge to anyone that
would like to try it.
Like what ive said or hate it, it feels nice just to voice
this, if you have a view either way, other than your fingers
in your ears shouting im right your wrong to me id like to
hear, hate mail is funny to read, just no junk mail please.
Peace
Kevin Bryant
