Dual Effects, Massive Gains - PharaohEvan

July, 22 2005 - Article #1

Keeping an overall game advantage is what gives the extra drive to many of the top players in the tcg world. These cards in yu gi oh come with a dual effect or is a card that accomplishes multiple tasks before it is destroyed, I find these cards the greatest help in not only my most competitive decks but also in a deck I need to give an extra boost to achieve a higher status.
A card that seems to be on the rise Is D.D. Assailant. This character is never good to be running into and I believe that the above paragraph explains why. First for the basics D.D. Assailant is a

4 star, earth, warrior, 1700 attack, 1600 defense monster that says When this card is destroyed as a result of battle with your opponent's monster, remove from play both this card and the opponent's monster that destroyed this card.

After thinking it is realizable that even though you use a monster summon to play this card from your hand normally no matter what (Except for the special conditions listed at the bottom) your opponents will have to use one card to get rid of this pesky D.D. Family member from the field. An attack will lead to a remove from play card for your opponent and getting rid of card advantage for your opponent, a use of a trap or spell to destroy the assailant qill do the same. (Dont forget special conditions are at the bottom)

Now dual effect cards seems to be growing in deck popularity each passing day. Cards like Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the beginning come attatched with free advantage seeing that you use the monsters priority... at no cost by useing a reusable effect you are aloud to remove 1 monster from the field at no cost or ignition except for playing the card and removing sometimes seemingly useless cards in your graveyard. Bls - Eotb is a dimensional oppening tank that can always swing for 3000 to, there is the second side of Bls - Eotb, a massive beatstick that can sometimes attack twice. Also Thousand Eyes Restricted is a dual like card it steals monsters makes all monsters unable to change position or attack (Excluding itself). Another card rising in popularity is Magician of Faith, not only does it retrieve any spell ( Even one of the
Trinity) it is still a monster that can swing and be tributed for effects such as the ignition for Enemy Controller or for the mandatory sacrifice required to bring out stronger monsters such as Jinzo or Phoenix God of Nephthys ( Another
2 great Dual cards). On top of the the above monsters being deadly Tsukuyomi can help use the above devastating effects over and more frequent, it practically punishes your opponent every time it is allowed to be used.

Though the following cards are dual effect, unlike the above they serve in different ways ( All will be clear soon). Breaker the Magical Warrior has to be one of the best monsters in the game because it does multiple things.
When Breaker is normally summoned a spell counter is placed on it and you are aloud to use the priority of its effect to " Break " ( Destroy) a spell or trap on the field. Now after the "breaking" is completed your opponent either decides to destroy the remaining breaker with a card on the field which would lead to a minus 1 card advantage for him/her or to attack it leading to a equal advantage ( But a loss of life) sometimes this Spellcaster can even destroy an opposing monster in battle leading to an automatic minus 1 card advantage for the opponent. Also another example is Snatch Steal, this card can do amazing ammounts of work. If used on a reusable effect monster you get to force a minus 1 card for your opponent plus 1 for you and then you use the effect for even deadlier circumstances for the opponent. In the case that the opponents chains a Mystical Space Typhoon or Dust Tornado ( ext) their is a equal ammount of cards lossed/gained for both players.

Now my favorite reusable effects come from monsters that activate an effect when they are flip summoned. The most important aspect of these cards to learn is that an attack or effect that flips these monsters face up is not a flip summon (Unless it says other wise) but a flip ( What triggers the effects of Magician of Faith or Mysterious Guard). Monsters like Golem Sentry, Stealth Bird, and my favorite flip summon effect monster Des Lacooda all make your opponent want to remove this card from the field before more dammage is done through their effects. if you can successfully activate one of these types of effects you can do just about anything from bouuncing a monster, destoying monsters, destroying spells/ traps, to drawing. Sometime the opponent will destroy the monster by a method besides battle which leads to them losing a
resource to get rid of the monster and youy gaining " Effect Advantage"
through the monster's effect use. Time for the Lacooda

Des Lacooda is a 3 Star, Earth, Zombie, 500 attack, 600 defense that says You can flip this card into face-down defense psiion once per turn during your main phase. When this card is flip summoned draw 1 card from your deck.

That means it can be searched by Pyramid Turtle, Giant rat, even sangan if needed. Now while you flip this wandering zombie (Maybe after it was search summoned last turn) you draw a card maybe a card you can use to protect the zombie for another special draw next turn, maybe nothing, or maybe the game winning top deck ( good top decks off the lacooda rock). If you are able to draw just once from this effect you get your 1 invested resource back, but be careful the useing of any of these specific effect monsters can lead in massive dammage from the opponent .

Another key player in some decks are monsters that if are destroyed by battle lead to you gaining another resource from its destruction, plus an extra monster to use as bait in the graveyard or to revive for later and it thins your decks makeing each following draw better. Some of these monsters are Gianst Rat, Mystic Tomato, and Pyramid Turtle each one helps build field presence and adds to greater chances for you to make a game breaking move. These types of monsters are like 2 monsters. A first turn Giant Germ or Nimble Momonga can be devastating for the opponent due to the field presence and dual card type.

Dammage should always be expected and learned that you will take dammage.seeing that dammage can not be measured through card advantaged you should learn to use every card in the best way that it can be invested, especially every card that can be used in multiple ways, can do multiple thing, or be used multiple times. Useing these cards effects in a correct way for the moment will nearly always provide you with the extra power you need to start overwhelming your opponent.

Special Conditions-

No matter how well these cards act alone or interact with other cards there is always the chance you will run into one of these stellar cards that was used in a great way. Sometimes your cards will backfire running into these stellar cards sometimes destroy eachother ( Breaker the Magical Warrior taking out a Snatch Steal) and lead to a " What Happened?" but Useing Special conditions can keep your dual effect cards in a stronger position than your opponents.

Mass Destruction - The advantage gained from useing the dual effect cards to their limit can shatter in seconds when hit with massive destruction.
Torrental Tribute is a huge hate card against the "Dual Effect" Monsters.

Fire with Fire - Destroying a Dual effect card with one of your own can turn the advantage back over to your side.

Beatdown - After the purpose of the card is served ( Or even before) it is vulnerable to a wel placed attack that can ruin your plans. Some exceptions are beatdown versus Reflect Bounder, D.D. Assailant, Hyper Hammerhead, axt.
