Dark Magician/Chaos Deck
fix by Sean
From: seanslcars@comcast.net
Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 23:44:50 +0000
Sean’s back with a new article for you all. Don’t forget to
check out www.seanzhomepage.freeservers.com for my personal
site and if you want send in your decks to be fixed in my
informal deck garage feel free to email me.
Hey all here’s another installment of my deck garage. Thanks
to all who sent decks in.
Hey there, *sender’s name here* here, i really enjoy reading
your articles on pojo and I wondered if you could give me
some pointers on my deck magician chaos deck. I went to a
tournament last Saturday and got thrashed about all over the
place!
The deck has lots of stall, especially spirit reapers are my
most useful tribute fodder, and a fairly even balance of
most other aspects except one, summoning Dark Magicianhttp://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=dark%20magician
through skilled dark's affect drains my hand! And if I am
not extremely cautious this without a doubt causes me to
take another beating. Please help!
Thanks in advance.

etc..
Ok let’s start with the hand draining thing. Bad hand
management is more of a duelist thing than a deck problem. I
have the same situation with Blade Knight in my deck. Yeah,
I can set my whole hand to give him 400 more ATK points, and
yeah doing that will pretty much always backfire. So I
don’t. My advice is play your spells normally. Draining your
hand of spells just to summon Dark Magician is not a good
idea. Merging Chaos and Dark Magician can be tricky because
the Dark Magician deck is very much a deck unto itself, and
trying to incorporate a chaos element can leave you with
Dark Magician-themed deadweights a lot of the time. Also, 43
cards is not too good. I always try to have 40 if at all
possible. Anyway let’s take this baby to the garage.
Monsters Level 5+
You won’t really need a lot of planning here. The heart of
this deck, the area you really need to concentrate on, is
the Monsters Level 4 and under. This part of the deck is
really just what the lower-level monsters will lead to. This
deck is different from most in that most decks start with
the high-power monsters and the lower powered monsters are
support for them. Here, the lower power monsters will form
the heart of the deck, and the higher-powered ones will
simply be the result of what the lower level guys do. The
lineup you have now looks good. I’m going to assume you
don’t have BLS. If you do, put it in and take Sorcerer out
(duh). DO NOT TRY TO RUN BOTH IN THIS DECK!
-Chaos Sorcerer
+Black Luster Soldier, Envoy of the Beginning (If you have
it)
Monsters Level 4-:
Here’s what you really need to concentrate on. You’ve got a
good setup, but a little tweaking will help here. Keep the
three Skilled Dark Magicians. They will be staples here.
Next are the two Spirit Reapers. I would recommend you
replace one with DD Warrior Lady. DDWL is light and will
provide monster removal that will prove essential in this
deck. Keep the two MoFs. They are crucial for a Dark
Magician deck. I would recommend replacing the two Ninja
Grandmaster Sasukes with Blade Knights. You will sacrifice a
little ATK power, but Blade Knights are more versatile, and
versatility will be at a premium in this deck. Apprentice
Magicians are of course good to have, and 2 is a good
number. Breaker and Sangan are both at home and shouldn’t
leave. Get rid of Sinister Serpent and replace it with a
third Magician of Faith. Yeah. They’re that important.
Finally, toss Thunder Nyan-Nyan for Cyber Jar. So for
Monsters Level 4 and under changes we have -Spirit Reaper
-Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke -Ninja Grandmaster Sasuke
-Sinister Serpent -Thunder Nyan Nyan
+DD Warrior Lady
+Blade Knight
+Blade Knight
+Magician of Faith
+Cyber Jar
Spells:
Let’s work down the list. Nobleman of Crossouts will remain
for the same reason DDWL should be put in-monster removal is
essential here. Book of moon is fun to set up Nobleman and
provides a quick counter, however, I recommend only 1, not
2. So ditch 1. Both Creature Swaps should go. You REALLY
don’t need them. Keep both Scapegoats. Actually let me bring
this back to Book of Moon. Scapegoats and Book of Moons
should take up three slots in your deck. How you divide that
up is up to you. Actually, on second thought, I would like
to revise my earlier decision. Keep both Book of Moons and
kick one goat. You should be trying to keep monsters out, so
the goats may interfere. Either way is good, and it really
is just a matter of taste. Three slots for goats and BoMs,
how you divide it up is just a matter of taste. Next up are
your two metamorphoses. Toss them both, sell your fusion
deck and put the money towards BLS. You’re already running
two not-entirely-compatible themes. Don’t try to add yet
another dimension to this deck. Also, I would recommend you
toss Card Destruction because, as you noted, hand size is
crucial, and you’re taking a 1 card loss here for really no
gain. You end up right back where you started except one
card less. All the staples should stay. For cards to be
added, I have four. First, I don’t know why you’re not
running it now, but Dedication through Light and Darkness
will provide a quick access to DmoC and will also provide
some much needed deck speed. Swords of Revealing Light will
provide a remedy if you’re stuck, which will make it that
much easier to drop one spirit reaper and card destruction.
Finally, Smashing Grounds will help out with control. I
wouldn’t use Lightning Vortex because of the discard
requirement, but you could try it. So for Spells we have
-Scapegoat -Creature Swap -Creature Swap -Metamorphosis
-Metamorphosis -Card Destruction
+Dedication through Light and Darkness
+Swords of Revealing Light
+Smashing Ground
+Smashing Ground
Traps:
And finally we come to Traps: Kick the two Sakuretsu Armors.
They’re good, but just don’t fit in here. Next, if you drop
any trap, drop drop off (sounds kinda cool). It fits nicely
into a hand destruction and pre-negation/control deck.
You’re not using either. For additions, I recommend two
always-sturdy (though unchainable) cards, Mirror Force and
Magic Cylinder. So trap changes would look like this:
-Sakuretsu Armor
-Sakuretsu Armor
-Drop Off
+Mirror Force
+Magic Cylinder
And your final deck will look like this:
Monsters Level 5+: 3
Dark Magician
Dark Magician of Chaos
Black Luster Soldier, Envoy of the Beginning Monsters Level
4-: 15 Skilled Dark Magician Skilled Dark Magician Skilled
Dark Magician Spirit Reaper DD Warrior Lady Magician of
Faith Magician of Faith Magician of Faith Blade Knight Blade
Knight Apprentice Magician Apprentice Magician Breaker the
Magical Warrior Sangan Cyber Jar
Spells: 17
Nobleman of Crossout
Nobleman of Crossout
Book of Moon
Book of Moon
Scaepgoat
Graceful Charity
Pot of Greed
Delinquent Duo
Snatch Steal
Dark Magic Attack
Mystical Space Typhoon
Heavy Storm
Premature Burial
Dedication through Light and Darkness
Swords of Revealing Light
Smashing Ground
Smashing Ground
Traps: 5
Mirror Force
Call of the Haunted
Ring of Destruction
Call of the Haunted
Magic Cylinder
Hope this has helped. Good luck!
