Subject: Theme support and what is being done about it
Chapters:
Part 1: The Introduction
Part 2: Spellcaster Support
Part 3: Warrior Support
Part 4: What is being done about it?
Part 5: What can Upperdeck Entertainment and Konami do about
it?
Part 6: My Opinion
Part 1: The Introduction
This article is about the lack of support for some themes
e.g. dinosaurs and
the themes that have too much support e.g. Spellcasters and
Warriors and what can be done about it. Dinosaurs one
support card which is Ultra Evolution Pill which lets you
sacrifice a reptile on your side of the field to summon a
dinosaur, but what competitive deck is going to run
dinosaurs and reptiles in the same deck? There are only a
couple of cards that are even playable in a dinosaur deck
which are Tyranno Infinity and Black Tyranno. There is also
The Two-Headed King Rex, but with only 1600 attack it
can be destroyed by a majority of today's level 4 monsters
and even some level 3 monsters e.g. Jerry Beans Man.
Part 2: Spellcaster Support
Spellcasters have too much support, heck they had a set
based around them {Magicians Force}. They have support such
as Sages Stone and Dark Magic Attack. There is also the
classic Spellcaster Dark Magician that has the most support
in the game for a single card, not an opinion, it's a fact.
Dark Magician has the card Skilled Dark Magician that lets
you sacrifice it to summon Dark Magician for a lower cost.
They also have the newly released promo Magicians Circle
that is seeing a lot of play in Spellcaster Decks.
They also have Diffusion-Wave Motion, which lets you equip
it to a level 7 or higher monster and it gives it an Asura
Priest effect for 1 turn.
Magicians Forces was a very good set, which brought us
staples such as Breaker the Magical Warrior, but imagine
instead of Magicians Force being released that Konami
replaced it with a set named Reptile Revolution would
Reptile's be as good deck as Spellcasters?
Part 3: Warrior Support
Warriors are also a theme that has a lot of support. They
have Reinforcement
of the Army, which is semi-restricted probably because of
the hand advantage
it can give you. They have Marauding Captain which is now
un-restricted and is used in most Warrior decks because it
can let you summon 2 monsters on the same turn while not
letting your opponent attack your Warriors, much like the
effect of Command Knight which sees some play and it powers
up Warriors on your side of the field by 400. The Warrior
Returning Alive can help get cards that don't stay on the
field long like Mystic Swordsman Lv2 or Exiled Force back to
your hand. Warriors are also a good theme to run in a
Topdecking situation because of cards like Swift Gaia the
Fierce Knight or
Blade Knight. In my opinion Konami can predict what decks
will shine by the cards they release and they want Warriors
to be a top deck so that is why they released so many cards
to help them.
Part 4: What is being done about it?
Well, from Invasion of Chaos and up we have seen a lot more
support for Insects e.g. Insect Princess, Howling Insect,
Millennium Scorpion and the Ultimate Insect family which has
made insects more playable because ythey have what they need
to be a successful deck. In the Lost Millennium series we
have seen lots more support for Rock types e.g.
Hieracosphinx, Master Monk and Megarock Dragon which has
also made them some what better because of some of their
bounce effects and the way you can use Rock Bombarment to
inflict battle damage which also can thin your deck and even
get more cards in the graveyard to give your Megarock Dragon
a monstous attack power!. In the Ancient Sanctuary Series we
had more support for Fairies e.g. Mazera De Ville, the
Agents and The Sanctuary in the Sky.
Part 5: What can Upperdeck Entertainment and Konami do about
it?
We still have to see more theme support for Dinosaurs, Aqua,
Reptile, and Fish. I know that most Reptiles, Fish and Aqua
type monsters are classed under A Legendary Ocean, but
imagine a pure fish deck without any staple monsters. You
would think that this would never work, but if Upperdeck
Entertainment made a change in the Banned/Restricted list it
might just give
theme decks what they need to be a TIER1 deck and make an
appearance in Regional/Shonen Jump top 8. As Konami create
the cards they could supply us with a lot more support for
the mentioned themes, which could very well be done in the
upcoming Japanese Set Shadow of Infinity or even later sets.
Part 6: My Opinion
My opinion is that Konami/Upperdeck Entertainment should
realise that themes
play a major part in the Trading Card Game. In this they
should release a set for every theme like the way they did
for Fairies, Rock and Spellcasters. The set would not have
to be all support cards for Dinosauars,
but it should be based mostly around that type. Same goes
for Fish, Reptile and Aqua, it doesn't have to be based
around cards only for that theme. I thin that they have
released a lot of support for Spellcasters because of the
anime, this may sound stupid, but they were the most used
type by Yugi in the anime and this would attract more little
kids to the game and Konami makes more money. I think that
they have released so much support for Warriors because they
have been a dominating theme for a long time. They have
given Warriors and Spellcasters the Support they need, now
move over and give the Dinosaurs a chance to shine!
