How the Ban List Should Be for
Upcoming September – Part III by Paul Yeem (Carrotizer)
NOTICE: I realized that I referred limited cards as
restricted, and semi-limited cards as limited.
Pardon me. Also, while I was writing these, I saw
the notice that the ban list will be released
earlier and put into effect 1 month earlier, so I
couldn’t take as much time as I wanted to.
For the last part, I’ll talk about the
semi-restricted parts of the list. These cards have
a lot of potentials, and they shouldn’t be ignored.
Yet some are overrated/underrated.
Gravity Bind is a good card, but I think being
semi-limited for continuous trap that allows you to
stall is okay. Good Goblin Housekeeping is
overrated. First time you use it, it’s –1. Second
time, it’s still –1. Third time, assuming we are
able to use 3, we break even. Also, if you set two,
and opponent uses Heavy Storm, even if you chain
both cards, you won’t be able to have 1 Good Goblin
Housekeeping in the graveyard, so it’s not so big
deal. It’s just another way of cycling through your
deck that you have to get all 3 cards to break even.
Upstart Goblin is another card. I think you should
be able to run three of these babies. Why is this
semi-limited? Because Exodia deck is too powerful?
You can run Magical Mallet by 3! Why isn’t that
semi-limited? Come on, Exodia deck needs a lot of
support with all those Spirit Reapers flying around,
and Deck Devastation Virus just destroying Exodia.
Spirit Reaper is also underrated. It’s ability to
stall forever is just amazing. Without targeting
effect or monster removal, you might as well just
deck out. Yes, it’s not THAT hard to get through
Spirit Reaper, but when it’s set face-down, you have
to attack it and end Battle Phase to kill it with
Smashing Ground during Main Phase 2. There is
another card, such as Unhappy Maiden, for those
effects. Reaper is too good to be run in 3’s.
Speaking of Smashing Ground, it’s a 1 for 1 ALWAYS.
NO EXCEPTIONS. It will always destroy something
unless your opponent uses Book of Moon. I think it
should be semi-limited. Hey, Lightning Vortex ( 2
for x) is limited. Smashing Ground is 2 for 2, and
you have a lot more flexibilities to use it with. 3
is just overkill. It shouldn’t be restricted either.
Therefore, semi-limited is a right place for it.
Cyber Dragon is another card that almost every decks
benefit from. Free 2100 ATK and LIGHT monster? And
MACHINE? LVL 5? HOLY CR*P! I’ll take it! It’s too
easy to use. Just drop it as 2100 ATK Special Summon
and you can summon another one if you have no
monsters during Main Phase 2. If you want more
Special Summons, then use Fiend Megacyber. Cyber
Dragon is way to simple and powerful.
Brain Control should also be semi-limited. I’m sure
nobody runs 3 Brain Control, but still, it’s a
Change of Heart for face-up monsters and you can do
a lot with your opponent’s monster in 1 turn. Same
goes for Enemy Controller, except it’s a lot more
versatile then its brainy friend. Way too powerful.
Being semi-limited shouldn’t cause any problems,
because it’s not like restriction, where you won’t
be able to use it that many times, whereas
semi-limited ones can be used with a lot of
combinations with other cards.
Now, I’d like to argue that Apprentice Magician is a
lot more deadly than it used to be. Think about it.
After its ruling changed, it can bring out Magician
of Faith, itself, Old Vindinctive Magician, Time
Wizard (ow yeah…50% of getting a free Raigeki), and
other Spellcasters (supposedly if there’s any that I
left out). Especially Magician of Faith, which is
restrict. Either Magician of Faith or Apprentice
Magician should be restricted to 1. I believe
Magician of Faith should be because restricting
Apprentice Magician would be cutting off supports
for Spellcasters, and I like them =/. If you think
carefully, having Apprentice Magician is like having
another copy of restricted spell cards.
However, Emergency Provision is certainly not one of
those cards. Why is this card still semi-limited
after Mirage of Nightmare was banned? To be able to
gain 5000 LP potentially? (I think it includes Field
Spell) It’s no threat to any decks that I can
possibly think of, and Toon deck can benefit from
this, as this will gain them 1000 LP without having
Toon World destroyed.
Reinforcement of Army is one of those Spells that
are just purely strong. I think this should be
restricted, and Warrior Returning Alive should be
semi-limited. You can just search any warrior, such
as Don Zaloog, Mystic Swordsman LV 2/4, D.D. Warrior
Lady/Assailant, and Exiled Force. Free search for
any Warrior? How come other themes do not have this
kind of support? If you need more search, there is
Freed the Matchless General, which is not a bad card
on its own.
Nobleman of Crossout is another card that is
questionable. First, let’s narrow down. We all agree
that this cannot be run in 3’s, because then there
would be no point in setting your monsters; they
would be just removed. It’s a bit too powerful to be
run in 2’s. It’s just 1 for 1, but a good 1 for 1.
If you really need to negate flip effects or Mystic
Tomato/Shining Angel’s effect, use Mystic Swordsman
LV 2, and graveyard effects, use, Drilloid. People
shouldn’t be able to drop Nobleman of Crossout
freely. If Magician of Faith is to be restrictred,
then Nobleman of Crossout should also be, to be able
to let that lone flip effect start off.
Mystic Box should be semi-limtied. It’s as good as
Creature Swap, except a little bit more complicated.
If Creature Swap is restricted, then this should be
semi-limited. Ability to give opponent your monster
is very useful
