Alright, so that’s the new OCG Banned List. In my opinion, this list isn’t really going to help the game. I’ll show you why.
First, we’ll review the new bans:
NEW! – Cyber Jar, Dark Hole, Exchange of the Spirit, Last Turn, Pot of Greed, Time Seal, Tribe-Infecting Virus, Victory Dragon.
I’ve put Pot of Greed and Tribe-Infecting Virus among them, because they weren’t banned in Asia’s last format.
Why? - Cyber Jar: I do agree with this one. It can change the entire game in your advantage or disadvantage, but in both situation it’ll impact the current duel heavily. - Dark Hole: Another good thing. This card’s restriction was a big mistake and I’m glad they recovered it. - Exchange of the Spirit: Because of this banning, they’ve killed an entire decktype there. Now I know that this card can be SO deadly in his deck, but when only one of them is allowed, those decks will have a hard time getting that card in their hand. I really disagree with this one. - Last Turn: Another stupid ban. It kills Last Turn decks obviously, but they weren’t seen that much...Of course, it is a OTK, but why won’t they restrict this to 1 per deck? I think that would be more than enough. - Pot of Greed: I do agree with this one, given the fact that they brought Graceful back. Still, it would be better when this card stayed at one per deck and Graceful remained banned. Graceful gives Dark World just too much power and with Magician of Faith allowed in two’s, you could gain huge advantages. - Time Seal: They banned this card because of the combination it formed together with Tsuku and Mask of Darkness. A bit unnecessary IMO, because they restricted Mask of Darkness and Drop Off, which could be used as a replacement of Time Seal, also and Tsuku was already restricted. Restricting it to one would’ve been enough I think. - Tribe-Infecting Virus: A bit too late, but still a good one. Tribe could lead to huge advantages when duelling against a Warrior or some other deck that ran only one type of monsters. Good job! - Victory Dragon: This is a card that hasn’t been released in the US. If you don’t know what it’s effect is, then go to ‘google’ or something and find it. Since it isn’t released here, I doubt I can say something useful about this banning, so I’ll leave this one unreviewed.
We’ve arrived at the Limitations. Many mistakes here, in my opinion.
NEW! – Graceful Charity, Mirror Force, D. D. Assailant, Dandelion, Drop Off, Last Will, Level Limit Area – B, Magical Shard Excavation, Mask of Darkness, Treeborn Frog.
Why? - Graceful Charity: I don’t know why they brought this back. With Dark World monsters released, this card has way too much power in the metagame. And with Magician of Faith semi-restricted, we’re defenitely going to see three or four of these in one single duel again...Just why? - Mirror Force: I don’t like this card at all. Together with Torrential, we’ve got way too much Mass Removal. Why can’t they just leave this card banned for an entire year, instead of switching it every 6 months? - D. D. Assailant: First good thing in the restrictions. This card was seen in threes everywhere and it really dominated the metagame. Good thing to restrict it for sure. - Dandelion: Another card that was only seen in Asia. I’ve never seen or used it, so judging about this card will be a bit useless. But by looking at it’s effect right now, I think it is a good job to restrict this. That’s all I can say on this card. - Drop Off: It was restricted because of the combination with Mask and Tsuku. Looks like they really wanted to kill that combination...Still a good thing to do. - Last Will: I fully agree with this one. It gave some decks enormous power and with three of them allowed, that wouldn’t be fare. Another good job. - Level Limit Area – B: Hooray! I really love this. Burn decks have way too much power and this is a first step in weakening them. Well done ;) - Magical Shard Excavation: Another Asia-only card........ - Mask of Darkness: The main piece of the combination. Good that it’s restricted now. - Treeborn Frog: They did a good job with this thing also. He could become one hell of an abused card, so I like this restriction.
Now you will probably think: What’s so bad about these restrictions? Well, not much. The problem lies in the cards that they didn’t restrict! I mean, they left Saku, Bottomless Trap Hole, Smashing, Spirit Reaper, Cyber Dragon, Mobius and Widespread Ruin all at three per deck!!!! I just don’t understand that. With everyone complaining about the current meta, they couldn’t possibly ignore all that?
Well, let’s go to the semi-restrictions:
NEW! – Apprentice Magician, Deck Devastating Virus, Magician of Faith, Nobleman of Crossout, Reflect Bounder. The following cards are no longer Semi-Limited: Abyss Soldier.
- Apprentice Magician: Good thing. Gave too much speed to Phoenix and Spellcasters and such...I like it ;) - Deck Devastating Virus: I guess this won’t be a big problem either. I don’t think many people will use two anyway... - Magician of Faith: Now this is stupid. Releasing Graceful from the Ban List and allowing this in two’s? Just why? One per deck is more than enough! - Nobleman of Crossout: Another stupid thing. Instead of restricting all the 1-for-1’s in the current meta, they’re releasing those cards from the restriction list... This card is probably for negating that Magician of Faith, but if they would’ve let that card at one, than this card could stay at one also... - Reflect Bounder: Not a big deal, it wasn’t used that much anyway. - Abyss Soldier: Not that much of a problem either. Water decks got a little boost because of this, and I like that pretty much, actually.
That’s it. All in all, I think it’s not a good list. Allowing all those cards that dominate the meta today at threes is just stupid. I really hope the US list gets a lot better...
