Subject: Viva la Revolution!-Anteaus
Hello all Pojo people out there!
I am here to talk to you about something that no one really
wants to talk about: the local card shops. And the
underrepresentation of the "little guy" in Yu-Gi-Oh! And the
dying world of Yu-Gi-Oh!, brought on by a lack of concern as
well as an exponential in teams and unmitigated crap that
surrounds the Shonen Jump Championship series.
First off, I want to talk about the fundamentals of this
great card game. And by "fundamentals," I don't mean how to
play the game; I mean where we all started. The basics. The
CARD SHOP. See, about 90% of the duelists out there will
never, ever, ever go to an SJC tournament, and that's OK.
But the problem is is that we don't ever focus on where
things actually happen: the local scene. It's a lot like the
Punk Revolution of the 1970's; it started locally, grew, and
suddenly, bands all over are selling out. Same thing with
Yu-Gi-Oh! Every single person started at their local card
shop, including Max Suffridge as well as whoever won Worlds
last year. Every single duelist started at their card shop,
playing for fun and to test stuff out.
The wonder is gone.
See, now people are strictly into netdecking and figuring
out what works at SJC, but the problem is is that is only
one sector of the metagame. The game itself is HUGE, on a
scale the likes of which we have never before seen, and we,
the little duelists, are being left behind. I quote the
founding fathers when I say "No Taxation Without
Representation!" The tax being placed upon the duelist's
heads is the overwhelming sense of inferiority that we feel
whenever we see the newest winner of the newest SJC
tournament, or when all we see is "n00b" and "pwn" all the
time on the message boards. We are afraid.
Fear is what is killing this game. We little duelists are
officially "conformists." We follow what's popular, and as
such, creativity has decreased rapidly. Just look at the
Tournament Report segment on our beloved Pojo.com! It's a
slap in the face, because a lot of us look forward to
reading those new ideas, those interesting plant decks and
helping each other out, fixing decks without the message
boards. Those things zip by a million miles a second,
without a chance to really get exposed. The only comments I
ever get on the boards are "this deck sux" and "you suck"
and "build a better deck." It's a bunch of crap, and as
such, I really don't want to post anymore. I get flamed all
the time on the boards, so what's the use?
In the T.R. segment on Pojo, I never get flamed. I never
post, either, because a) I'm never at a tournament (though I
know a million people who are) and b) there's really no
point. No one reads them anyway, and if they do, they'll
either ignore it or netdeck your deck and never tell you
about it. It's crazy, and it's all brought about by a sense
of superiority as well as the inferiority complex felt by
those who do not or cannot attend an SJC or a regionals
tournament.
Now then, just really quick, teams and apathy. Teams are
growing, and as a result tend to own at SJC or at Regionals
or wherever, leaving the little man in the dust. It's
horrible. But so is the apathy that is expressed by not only
these teams but by the duelists who don't ever contribute to
help each other out over Pojo.com. The boards are a waste of
time because you never get to see half of what is posted
unless you sit in front of your computer 24/7/365, which
most people don't do. So come on, people, help me out here.
Just talk, ok? Just do something about this, help me
revitalize Yu-Gi-Oh! and take it back to where it truly
belongs: at the local level. Regionals and Nationals and
Worlds are great--they are the goals for which we all
strive. But at the local level is where we all learn, and
Pojo.com is truly a local site, because it focuses on local
shops in the T.R. section and what not-so-top-8 duelists as
well as top-8 duelists think about everything in the CCG
section.
Help me build this game back to where it was when I first
started. Let's take it back to the streets and the schools.
Viva la revolution!
Cheers,
Anteaus
