Subject: Duel Wars-The Clone Wars - Ezekiel

Hi All! Hope you've enjoyed some of my Deck suggestions and would like to wish you all a Happy New Year! Now in the spirit of "turning over a new leaf" I'm going to have a good long rant about the state of the dueling world and what should be done about it. Enjoy!

D'ya know what really grinds my gears? The lack of originality on display in the dueling world at the present. Every deck is a clone of each other and seem to include the following cards;

Parshath, Cyber Dragon, Breaker, Donny Z, Reaper, MoF, DDA/WL, Sangan, Morphing Jar, Mobius, X Force, SakAr, Widespread Ruin, Royal Decree, Lightning Vortex, BoM, Smashing Ground etc.

Now I am not saying that these are bad cards, because there great, but if every deck runs them then where would the fun be? There would be no edge in the game, there would be a 50% chance of winning and the action would get real old, real fast.
I'm no nubie player, I followed the anime and got the starter decks ASAP (Kaiba for me, Yugi for my bro)

Although I must confess that I have not been a steady follower of the game and have drifted in and out between sets. But now I'm back and here to stay! [End Confession]

There was an excuse for lack of originality in the begining, every deck had a Summoned Skull for attack (2500 for 1 tribute is still exceptable) Giant Soldier of Stone/Mystical Elf for defence and strategies mainly consisted of "dumping BEWD in the graveyard with Card Destruction, Dark Hole the field, and Monster Reborn to win." But now there are 18 sets (not including promos and structure decks) with more than 1500 cards from and still people are using the same 20 cards? Upper Deck can't solve this problem by releasing cards that are too hard to summon or nobody uses as they will stick to their guns and not change cards at all. I am referring to the new Shadow of Infinity set (sweet name) and three cards in particular;

SOI-JP027
Princess - Pikeru

Light/Spellcaster/4/2000/0
This card can't be normal summon. This card can only be special summon by the effect of [Ordeal of Princess]. During your Standby Phase, gain Lifepoint equal to the number of monster on your field x800.

SOI-JP028
Princess - Kuran
Dark/Spellcaster/4/2000/0
This card can't be normal summon. This card can only be special summon by the effect of [Ordeal of Princess]. During your Standby Phase, do damages to opponent's lifepoints equal to number of opponent's monsters on the field x600.

SOI-JP044
Ordeal of Princess
Magic - Equipment
This card can only be equipped on a [White Magician - Pikeru] or [Black Magician - Kuran]. The attack strength of the equipped monster is increased by 800. When the equipped monster destroy a monster with level of 5 or higher in battle, sacrifice the equipped monster, and special summon a [Princess - Pikeru] if this card is equipped on [White Magician - Pikeru],or [Princess - Kuran] if this card is equipped on [Black Magician - Kuran], from your hand or deck to the field.

...
Does that not seem like such a circumstantial, complicated thing to summon? The effect of the monsters ie the recovery/damage takes place during YOUR Standby Phase. Since the Princesses would be summoned during your turn after your Standby Phase it would then be your opponents turn where he/she could use something as simple as Lightning Vortex or Goblin Elite to make all of your effects for nothing (its a nomi so no revival for you!)

While I don't want to think that the best days of Yu-Gi-Oh! are behind us you have to wonder what duelists think of the lack of originality. Everyone should make it their New Year's Resolution to create an original, yet powerful deck. There are plenty of cards and combos to choose from, all thats needed is the courage to oppose all of the clone deck circulating at the moment. Make a theme deck, be it from the anime or otherwise. The new Rock Structure deck promises to "shake" things up. Splash in some of the Rock types they left out such as the Monks or Jujitsu Master and sweep a tourney. Catch someone off guard with a little known or fogotten cards such as;

PGD-047 Dark Coffin
Trap Card
When this face-down card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, your opponent must select and execute 1 of the following effects:
n Discard 1 card in his/her hand
n Select 1 monster on his/her side of the field and destroy it

PGD-052 Pharaoh’s Treasure
Trap Card
After activation, put this card face-up in your Deck and shuffle it. When you draw this card, it is immediately sent to the Graveyard. Then add 1 card in your Graveyard (expect this card) to your hand.

LOD-087 Magic Reflector

Magic Card

Select 1 Magic Card that remains face-up on the field and put 1 counter on it. If the selected card is destroyed, the counter is removed instead of the card being destroyed.

Are these cards perfect? No but there are a small sample that there are cards out there with interesting effects that don't have to be called Spirit Reaper or Sakuretsu Armor to be played. Dark Coffin for example would make your opponent was one of his/her MT removal cards and in turn they would lose hand advantage or field presence. Magic Reflector could save one of your continuous Spell cards from destruction such as Wave-Motion Cannon or a field card that is needed.

In conclusion there are many cards that are just waiting to be used be creative and maybe you will see that even if you lose with an original deck that you enjoyed playing with, you can have fun.

Thanks all for reading, hope you enjoyed it. As always my email address is

if you want to contact me about anything, deck fixes, questions, views, I'll reply to them all.

Till next time duelists, Peace Out

Ezekiel
