Subject: Speed Kills--by brad

Hey, all, it’s brad back with another article. I hope you’ll enjoy this one. As the title suggests, I’ll be talking about a speed deck, otherwise known as a draw-engine. In the current metagame, we are seeing a lot of cookie cutters. This deck is built to spread those decks thin and force them to expend valuable resources much more quickly. In a control-laden environment, this may prove a tricky task, but not to worry. There should be ample opportunities for this deck to shine.

First, we’ll take a look at a few tech cards. The Des Lacooda are in for the sheer draw opportunity, but then again, you must protect them if you are planning on using their effects. In order to counter the overwhelming temptation you opponent may have for attacking them, we’ll throw in some stall cards. Level Limit-Area B and Messenger of Peace will be used in conjunction with one another, but it takes some skill to know which should be played at certain phases of the game. This will serve to keep your lower level monsters alive for long enough to draw into destruction options. Some will opt to add in an extra card, making the count 42 by using the much-maligned Lightning Vortex. In a deck such as this, the discard cost will be less painful because, often, your hand will be full. The Dark Mimics are used for their draw ability. If LV2 is special summoned by the effect of LV1, you get two cards. Use these with caution, because they will need to go down by battle to activate their effects. Newdoria will provide you with a little bit of field clearance to further advance the strategy.

Pot of Avarice is a must in this deck, because it will mill through your cards at rather an alarming rate. PoA will help that by giving the time to reuse those monsters, and keep you from decking out. This deck will also need some burn damage to run effectively, and rather than using Magic Cylinder, which requires an attack (may not be possible because of Messenger of Peace or LLAB), I would elect to use Ceasefire. Ceasefire will usually result in 1500-2000 points of chainable burn damage. Wave-Motion Cannon, if allowed to stay on the field for long periods of time, can deal some hefty damage. With the low-level monsters in this deck, battle damage may be at a premium.

If you run into something that could cost you the game, Solemn Judgment will have its ability to shine. Two traps will effectively stop what may be your arch-nemesis when running this deck, Mytic Swordsman LV2. When they summon MSL2, activate Chain Disappearance, and boom! All MSL2’s are removed from play. Trap Hole will also tech against the stray Don Zaloog or other monsters which may prove hindrances.

Now that you understand the tech choices, it is time for a little bit of explanation on the tactics of the deck. Of course the main strategy behind this deck is to draw cards, thus overwhelming your opponent with sheer resources. Control and stall options are inserted into this deck just in case strategies need to be changed during game play. Your side deck will be most critical in this game. Then again, a commonly used side deck choice could hurt a lot. Beware of King Tiger Wanghu. King Tiger, if allowed to stay on the field, will effectively disrupt your strategy. Keep that in mind when using monster removal.

Good, now onto the deck itself. This is running at 41 cards, or 42 with Lightning Vortex. Keep that in mind.

You may tweak it a bit so that it runs better. Feel free to use this deck, just give credit where it’s due.

Until next time, Happy Dueling!

Like me? Think I am a pompous nOOb for even suggesting the use of such stupid cards and strategic formulas? Drop me a line. I’d love to hear some feedback. As always, I do not accept unsolicited hate mail. brad@bradlandusa.com
