burn support tips - Change
So you have a burn deck
with a killer stall engine and
a way to deal massive amounts of damage but you still lose.
Well, maybe it's because you lack support cards. I think a
good ratio for a burn recipe is about equal parts stall,
burn and support. So what are some areas burn needs support
in:
DRAW
Burn is all about bad card advantage. You are trading card
advantage to lockdown the field and to gain LP advantage. If
you don't have something to help you outdraw your opponent,
then you'll often end up running outta steam partway thru
and
your opponent comes back and hits you with something nasty.
So you need a draw engine. Here are some primaries in the
current
format:
Deikoichi, esp. combo'd with Tsukuyomi
Pros: opponent gets no cards, decent stats, easily searched,
Dark
combos with desert sunlight
Cons: you only get one card unless your combo with Tsuku (a
restricted card) comes off; a burn deck is likely to find
its monsters being hit by Mystic Swordsman L2 and Exiled
Force -- a lot
Des Lacooda
Pros: easily searchd out, self-flipping, opponent gets no
cards
Cons: terrible stats; expect to get at most 2 flips on
average,
although that's still not at all bad; does not combo with
desert
sunlight
Morphing Jar
Pros: you get 5 cards in hand, the most you are
guaranteed to get in this format w/o Card Destruction,
period.
easily searched; combos with desert sunlight
Cons: Bad stats, your opponent gets 5 cards
Cyber Jar
Pros: dark hole effect, combos well with flip monsters, 5
cards
total for you, you know what your opponent got, dark, combos
with desert sunlight
Cons: your opponent gets 5 cards total and knows what you
got
I think Deikoichi works better in a Pot of Avarice-oriented
deck.
I STRONGLY recommend you think about Cyber +
Morphing/multiple copies
of Lacooda/a mix in order for your deck to succeed
consistently.
REMOVAL
Yep, this is a big issue. If you do not want Lvl2/Des
Wombat/Jinzo/
Mobius/etc owning you, you need to pack some counters.
Solemn Judgement
is great but you only get so many and it burns you, a lot. I
STRONGLY
recommend that your burn deck include Dark Hole and
Torrential Tribute.
Additional forms of removal such as Cyber Jar, Night
Assailant and
Lava Golem are also highly recommended.Have your side deck
include
some additional counters, be it Mobius, Gyaku Gire Panda,
Breaker,
your own Des Wombats -- basically whatever works for you.
Your maindeck can probably survive with little/no Spell and
Trap
removal, relying on merely Solemn Judgement. Now personally,
I
think MST is sooo good, you should include it, too but
that's just me.
Your sidedeck should definitely include additional
spell/trap removal
like Mobius and/or Breaker, and maybe Heavy Storm or Giant
Trunade,
to help with matchups where Wave Motion Cannon, Royal
Decree, etc
pop up on opponent's side of board.
Tsukuyomi gets a special mention. She provides a temporary
off-switch
for things like Des Wombat and Jinzo and sets up your
opponent's
monsters for defeat. For example, the game I had where Tsuku
flipped my
opponent's Jinzo face down and Des Wombat finished Jinzo
off. If you
yourself are running lots of Flip Effect Monsters, Tsukuyomi
becomes
even better.
MORE SUPPORT
If you are running flip effect monsters, try Threatening
Roar and Desert
Sunlight to ensure they get their effects. Desert Sunlight
is also
awesome for timing their effects just right.
Chain Disappearance is a good counter to Spirit Reaper,
Mystic Swordsman
Lvl 2, multiple Magical Merchants -- I consider it side
deck, but it can
help stop some of the big threats to you. Thanks to my
opponent Ryan,
I'd like to add that Mask of Restrict is a nice counter to
Soul Control,
or any other tribute heavy deck.
Personally, I don't see a big point to recursion cards like
Premature
Burial and Call of the Haunted in burn, altho I will say
that Stealth Bird
combos well with them :) However, recursion cards like Mask
of
Darkness and Magician of Faith can be huge. A Tsukuyomi/Mask
of
Darkness combo recycling Secret Barrel or Just Desserts
should be
game after 1-2 uses...Mask and/or Magician are also great
for
retrieving spent stall cards, just when your opponent was
going
to break through.
The following are the "staples" I thought were so good, they
showed
up in my burn deck: Sangan, DDWL, SRL, Dark Hole, MST,
Torrential,
plus some near staples like the Jars and Ceasefire.
