Subject: The Truth About Advantage - Zach Frazier
Okay, I know this is gonna tick some people off, but I'm
going to say it
anyway.
Ever notice how all the top players and article writers keep
going on about
"advantage?" About how this card can give you +1 while this
other card gives
you -2? It's as if these people think that this entire game
can be figured
out mathematically.
Now, I'm a very logical person by nature, and I'll admit
that I try to
figure things out using math and science as well, but I also
understand that
some things just can't be explained. I believe that the game
of Yu-Gi-Oh is
one of those things.
Take for example the new baby boomer in the game-Cyber
Dragon. Just for fun,
take a stroll on the Pojo Trade Forums, and try to count the
number of
people who say they need Cyber Dragon.
Are you back yet?
Good. Hard to get a definite number, huh? That's because
EVERYONE wants the
card. Why? Because they believe that it gives them advantage
in a duel. But,
every time my opponent has pulled Cyber Dragon's effect off,
I had 3 or more
monsters on the field, each with an attack of 2300 or more.
How does a card
like that give advantage?
Go back to the forums, but this time count the number of
people who want
DDA. Wait. On second thought, don't. Just use the same
number you used for
Cyber Dragon.
D. D. Assailant is another card that people say is just
unbelievably
amazing. However, this time I'll agree with them. DDA is a
very good card,
if you use it correctly. I have a friend who only owns 1 DDA,
but that one
card has pulled him out of many difficult situations.
Now, to look at the other side of the issue.
I currently run a machine based deck. (And, I'd just like to
mention that it
is a REAL machine deck, with 16 of my 20 monsters being
machines.) The
strongest monster in my deck is an Ancient Gear Golem.
Hold it right there.
This is the point where people begin to tell me all the bad
things about
AGG.
But, like I said earlier, even if it gives you negative
advantage, if it
wins duel after duel for you, why not use it? I can only
think of 1 duel
I've played where I didn't win after Ancient Gear Golem hit
the field, and
that was only because the friend I mentioned earlier rammed
his DDA into it.
The point I'm making here is, don't just look at the
advantage a card gives
you. Look at all the potential uses for the card once you
play it. Cyber
Dragon does nothing more than attack. DDA, on the other
hand, can eliminate
huge threats for you, sometimes permanently.
I figure that if duelists started thinking this way, we'd
have more
originality in the game.
