Subject: Valkyrion: A touch of Old School in a new
environment - Raikoo
Well in about a month I'll be on vacation which
means I'll be able to go to one of the two or three
Yugioh Tournaments a year my job allows me to
attend. Coarse due to the nature of my job I try to
make as big an impact on the local tourny as I can
seems how they're few and far between for me. So,
starting about a month and a half or so ago, I
started sifting through my collection for what I
should play this time around and I began reminicing
upon my personal favorite semi-nomi monster,
Valkyrion The Magna Warrior. Valky was definately
one of the heralds of the Old School Yugioh
environment. It essentially did what Gate Guardian
could only dream of doing and more. What's so
special about it? Well let's take a look at the
early Yugioh Mecha.
Valkyrion The Magna Warrior
8-star, Earth, Rock/Effect
ATK/3500, DEF/3850
This card can only be special summoned by offering
'Alpha the Magnet Warrior', 'Beta the Magnet
Warrior', and 'Gamma the Magnet Warrior' from your
hand or the feild as a tribute. If 'Alpha the Magnet
Warrior', 'Beta the Magnet Warrior', and 'Gamm the
Magnet Warrior' exist in the graveard, you can offer
this card as a tribute to special summon these three
cards to the feild.
With an ATK of 3500 and a DEF of 3850, this is
certainly a heavy hitter that's not to be taken
lightly. It does, however require the tribute of 3
specific monsters to play however what gives this
the edge over any semi-nomi/nomi monster (that I'm
aware of) is that similier to Fusion and Ritual
monsters, the needed tributes can be either from the
feild or the hand, or any combination of both. Its
seacond effect is rather intresting as well, while
on the feild, and you have the three pieces in the
graveyard, you can tribute Valkyrion to bring back
the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma that you used to play
Valky. This trade off of one big beatstick for three
smaller monsters is a nice display of self
replenishment and swarm, something Water Dragon
tries to mimic and to an extent does reletively
well. Of final note, being a semi-nomi, Valkyrion
itself can be special summoned from the graveyard as
long as it was properlly summoned before hand. A
Valkyrion equipped with United We Stand is indeed a
scarey monster when it also has Alpha, Beta, and
Gamma hanging out with it.
Admittidly Alpha, Beta, and Gamma on their own
aren't very spectacular with stats borderlineing
average at best for 4-star normal monsters. Ofcaorse
the toughest challenge faceing the construction of a
Valkyrion deck is getting the pieces as none of
these old video game promos have yet to be
reprinted, so unlessone has had a bunch of them from
then finding the peices might prove to be hard. I
used to have an Alpha, Beta, Gamma and two
Valkyrions but I traded them off almost as soon as I
got them, so I was ecstatic when, thanks to a hook
up from a close friend and a lucky visit to a local
card shop, I was able to get the pieces I needed.
Now what helps a Valkyrion deck? Valkyrion itself is
far too big to be searched out by any means, so
Alpha, Beta, and Gamma are the keys. Alpha and Gamma
have 1400, and 1500 atk respectively so Giant Rat
and Sangan are their best friends, sadly Beta has
1700 atk so it can't be searched out. With all three
mosnters being normal, haveing Dark factory of Mass
Production helps out quite a bit in reclaiming any
pieces that might've been lost due to battle or
discard. Being Earth Monsters Gaia Power helps their
about-average stats with a nice +500 atk, the -400
def is almost unnoticeable. Magical Mallet is
another good spell, allowing you to keep Valky
pieces in your hnd while shuffleign out the other
cards in your hand for new ones. While not directly
linked to Valkyrion or searching the pieces out, a
monster that gives the deck a boost of strength is
Chainsaw Insect. As I'm sure most everyone out there
by now is familier with this souped up bug, it
trades off being a 4-star, 2400/atk beatstick for
allowing the opponet to draw a card each time it
battles a monster, now that may seem like a bad
thing, but really the object of a Valkyrion deck is
big beatsticks, so as long as that bug is clearing
the feild, it's doing its job rather nicely. Being
an earth type, it gets a nice bonus from Gaia Power
as well. For added fun, one could give Card of Safe
Return with this deck. Play Valkyrion, sac to bring
back Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and that's three nice cards
you get to draw.
What hurts a Valkyrion deck? Well plenty of things
actually. The most notable that comes to mind being
Macro Cosmos, which is still something I'm debateing
on how to deal with. Coarse getting Valkyrion itself
might be tricky, but if played properlly the end
results should justify any inconviences that might
pop up along the way.
This is the current decklist for what I've got and
it may or may not change depending on how much
testing I can get in before August 6th. Hopefully
I'll be able to show that the old School can still
rock the game with the best of the new comers.
