Subject: Monarch control thoughts -DMC
Yo, i'm new to the tips, but since i like to express
myself i decided to give it a try.
I've been wanting to try out a monarch deck since
the monarchs started to appear, however a ban list
or 2 ago they weren't really a great viable option.
THe list we're in now gave them stuff to work with,
and the next one will make it even better. I will
tailor this to the april first one.
First off, monarch control is based on using the
monarchs to pop your opponent a sucker punch, since
we are using monsters for that use your spells and
traps more for summoning and drawing purposes. We do
not need 3 mobius, a heavy storm, an mst, etc, thats
overkill and will result in a dead draw eventually,
guaranteed. Along those lines 3 zaboorg and a
lightning vortex along with 3 saku a couple
bottomless trap holes and 3 soul exchange is also
very redundant and unneeded.
Find a balance, I like 2 mobius, a heavy, and 2
nobleman of extermination for magic. For monsters 2
zaboorg, a lightning vortex, a nobleman of crossout,
and a bottomless trap hole seem to do well. A
sakuretsu armor could work, but i don't like it, and
i will explain why. Oh, andwith mirror force comming
back i wouldn't shy that one off, maybe at the
expense of the bottomless.
Next, to set upt he control you need tributes. i
liek snatch steal, brain control, and soul exchange
(only one since you do want to attack sometime) to
tkae my enemies stuff. not to mention brain control
and snatch work all around, in any situation. of
course call of the haunted and premature burial are
needed, and with graceful back to dump and revive
this can work to some massive advantage. Spirit
reaper works wonders due to his ability, and can pop
your opponents hand for more control if you can get
teh hit in. i liek 2 of those btw. Treeborn frog is
sweet, since it recurrs to the field EVERY turn, and
if you run this decktype you won't have much to set
on the field to stop its ability. Also, strike
ninja, in pairs or triplets prefferably, since
reaper is dark, and hes dark, and sangans dark....
"I dodge your lightning vortex by removing my
useless reapers from play, and next turn i will
summon my monarch because i still have a tribute" :)
Need to recur a monarch thats spent and dead? Pot
puts him back in the deck for you.
Magic? 2 MoF are wonderful, and i run a Dark
Magician of Chaos as well, his abilities are awsome,
and since you are running a deck based on tribute
he's not hard to get out, plus with graceful in the
format again you can dump and revive easily.
now, there is a lot of general utility in the deck,
because you want to keep options open. I try to shy
from the most common traps so i can use nobleman of
extermination safely, removing your opponents 3 saku
armors with a card is awsome. Nobleman of crossout
is the same, but i'd be wary since everyone will
have MoF again. Dark Magician of Chaos also hurts
monster recursion for them, as well as netting back
a magic for you, and its dumpable, which is
important for the next few cards i want to mention.
Negation. Negation is your friend, use it. Yes,
Magic Jammer discards a card, big deal, negate the
spell, dump a monster, revive it. It may be a minus
1, however sometimes stopping that spell is more
important, especially since -1 from hand can save 4
on the field. Divine wrath, don't want them to smack
a DDA or DDWL into you, let them then negate hte
affect, they take damage and you keep your monster.
7 tools of the bandit is pure ownage, -1000 life to
negate a trap? Since lifepoints aren't too important
when you are the controller don't hestitate with
this one, negate the call of the haunted, the mirror
force, the royal decree, the trap hole or bottomless
trap hole, whatever it is, if it is a trap it will
screw them up more if you negate it than taking the
hit and moving on. Also, you may want to negate
attacks to keep your tributeable monsters safe and
to let them keep their monster to steal, so Draining
sheild works well as well as the ever present
magical cylindar, draining being more important if
you take my hint and run the 7 tools in multiple :)
Of the monarchs only mobius and zaboorg have really
owning abilities, grannmarg is useless 90% of the
time, and thestalos, albeit cool, is weak because
you really want to control the field first, hand
second, and he doesn't do that well. Sideboard them
both with a jinzo though, and use them as the
situation dicktates.
I would post a deck, however i'd rather let people
experiment with the idea a bit and tweak it for
themselves, and with what i've already written you
sohuld have a good idea of how the deck should work,
at least in my humble opinion. I just really want to
caution against my initial emphasis of overdoing a
card effect. the point of the monarchs is to summon
monsters while destroying cards, not just destroying
the cards, having 8 monster removal and 8 magic
removal is overdoing it and will usually result in
bad draws and worse topdecks.
I will say that my tributes for such a deck are like
this:
2 Mobius, 2 zaboorg, a DMoC in the maindeck. A
thestalos, a jinzo, and an airknight in the side.
Cyber dragon doesn't really count as a tribute...
right? Chaos sorceror is the right level for
tribute, but isn't either. summon, remove, sack,
kill. That fun stuff with him.
And last but not least. For some fun run a
metamorphosis, That little froggy from SOI makes a
great thousand eyes restrict, zaboorg can turn into
a dark balter the terrible or reaper on the
nightmare(a personal fav here, direct atatck hand
control thats not destroyed in battle!), and for
some really funny looks a mobius turns into ojama
king (you didn't need thosae 3 monster slots did
you?) or a dark blade the dragon knight (cause we
liek to remove 3 monsters from play when we do
damage, and still a 2200 attack). Not to mention
every OTHER fusion in the game, other than XYZ and
Dark paladin and such....
Anyway, apologies form making this an article, but i
tohught i should get the word out... DMC out.
