Trading Card Game Tips from fans

SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Trample them into the Dust!

Hiyah everybody!

This is my first tip other than a tourney report, so I’m kinda playing’ it by ear.

Today I will talk about my favorite type of monsters, the piercing or trample monsters.

There are only a few of these monsters, and I will review each and every one of them. I did not include monsters that deal effect damage as a result of battle, but instead inflict battle damage.

(If I forgot one let me know!)

Mefist the Infernal General

Airknight Parshath

Saber Beetle

Dark Driceratops

Enraged Battle Ox

Exarion Universe

Spear Dragon

The Familiar Possessed Monsters

In general these monsters are very good with Robbin’ Goblin, forcing your opponent to discard a card from their hand as well as to do the secondary effects of Parshath and Mefist, resulting in major advantage. But there are too few monsters with four or less stars to consider making a deck around.

Mefist the Infernal General

This guy got really overlooked when Airknight was played a lot. He has lower stats and only discards a card from your opponent’s hand which was seen as a lesser effect than Airknight. Of course the few people who played him pulled him out immediately when Cyber Dragon came out.

2/5 he tries, but just doesn’t make the cut nowadays.

Airknight Parshath

Now here is a card that exemplifies the term “fad”. He was so popular that I saw someone trade their BLS and DMoC to get one. Then came Cyber Dragon. Suddenly 1900 attack points were not the standard anymore. He still sees moderate use today since we are so out of draw engines, but there is the constant threat of Cyber Dragon. Once Cyber Dragon is played less, we probably will see more of Airknight.

3.5/5 we’ll see how the next list affects his play.

Saber Beetle

This guy has some potential. He has a 2400 attack but a measly 600 defense, which screams to be Tsukuyomi raped. Other than that he has no other effect. I can’t see why he would be run over any other tribute monster, like Mobius, Jinzo, or Cyber Dragon. He does kill all these monsters, but his defense makes him very undesirable with Tsukuyomi, Enemy Controller and Book of Moon out there.

1/5 he is a trample monster, but his defense makes him a liability.

Dark Driceratops

This was one of my favorite monsters in the game, until I saw the card art. He boasts the same attack as Saber Beetle, but has the much more impressive defense of 1500. This makes him impervious to Tsukuyomi and not very many monsters could break that defense. He is definitely not splashable, as there are better tributes out there. However there are whispers of a Dinosaur themed structure deck, so maybe he will be able to be played in that.

3/5 Good, but not great.

Enraged Battle Ox

This guy came out in IOC just like Dark Driceratops, but he sees much more play simply because he is a no tribute monster. He also gives the gift of trample to any Beast, Winged Beast, or Beast Warrior type monsters on your side of the field. That is why I use him in my Phoenix deck, because the Lei-Lei’s and Berserk Gorillas get that effect as well as the mighty Phoenix. He also has a stable 1700 attack which kills most lower level monsters and suicides into DD Assailant. Many people prefer him much more over any other piercing monster.

5/5 Gotta love him in that Phoenix Beastdown.

Exarion Universe

This guy I love above Enraged. He has a higher attack which means that he can kill his cousin Enraged and a higher defense that does not get Tsukuyomi raped. Also the defens is usually enough to stop all monster attacks except for Cyber Dragon, Jinzo, and Mobius. Then the neat part is that you can choose to lower his attack by 400 points to give him trample for the turn. This makes him more versatile than Enraged as he can fluctuated between the two attacks. Also he works well with Enraged as he becomes an 1800 monster with trample, which would be the highest Trample monster without a debilitating effect.

5/5 He can be more versatile than Enraged Battle Ox

Spear Dragon

I believe that my all time favorite monster was the first to have trample. He also had 1900 attack which swept the board with the 1800 and 1700 monsters that were used back in the day. His 1900 attack also suicides into Airknight as well as killing most monsters that aren’t tributes. He is a dragon type, but that is not a plus or minus to him, but he is a half of a hangover monster. You can switch him during your next turn, allowing him to deal a larger amount of damage than the other hangovers. The problem is that he has 0 defense. This makes him rapable to the extreme, as well as major hurt from other trample monsters. I still love this card though...

4/5 man that hangover and defense HURTS!

The Familiar Possessed Monsters

These are all the second stages of the acclaimed elemental charmers. They only get trample when you tribute the appropriate charmer. This makes them next to useless, as they only have 1850 attack, which Spear Dragon kills with ease. I just don’t see these cards making any competitive contribution at all

1/5 for being almost completely useless as trample monsters
