Grand Format Update to Cyberdark Impact (CDIP) – Includes "Red Gadget" in anticipation of the Machine Structure Deck release and "Victory Dragon" in anticipation of its Shonen Jump magazine release.
READ THIS FIRST Here are notes about the update from the initial release of Grand Format. You can find the updated Format itself below the notes. This will be the last drastic set of changes in Grand Format, in order to shrink the list as much as possible and further stabilize the Format. From now on players should expect only to see a few cards added to the list with each booster set update. Special thanks go to all the players and judges in forums, e-mail, and in New York City stores who submitted actual constructive criticism rather than going on a rant during the initial release period. The three-month research period before that was primarily to refine the restriction techniques used in the Format, particularly in the modified Forbidden Cards List. (If you’ve seen the Forbidden Cards text throughout the Revolution Format testing series, you’ll understand what this means.) The initial release feedback showed that some fixes to the list of cards were necessary after the restriction techniques were figured out.
Changes in the Update:
Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End (1 copy may be used if Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined. In addition, cards whose effects include Special Summoning one or more monsters from the Graveyard or cards removed from play can not be used. This does not however affect card effects that include Ritual Summoning.) (ex. Treeborn Frog, Soul Resurrection, Miraculous Descent) – Apologies go out to everyone about what happened before with the "Dark World" issue. This is what should have been put up. (sigh…) –
Exchange of the Spirit (Up to 3 copies may be used but you can not use in the Deck and Side Deck combined cards with effects that include picking up cards from the Deck, sending cards directly from the Deck to the Graveyard, or removing cards in either Graveyard from play.) (ex. "Magical Merchant", "Fiend Comedian", "Rock Bombardment") – Fans of Ishizu should be pleased with this one. –
Fiber Jar (1 copy may be used if Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined. In addition, cards whose effects include preventing the declaration of attacks, negating attacks, or preventing your opponent from conducting his/her Battle Phase can not be used.) (ex. "Threatening Roar", "Negate Attack", "Thunder of Ruler") – Any player looking for an infinite stall will have to work harder to achieve it. This allows certain cards to be taken off the restriction list and Fiber Jar is still incredibly useful to aggressive players who take advantage of it to hit their opponent hard after clearing the field. –
Manticore of Darkness (Up to 3 copies may be used but you can not use in the Deck and Side Deck combined cards with effects that would activate when a monster is Special Summoned.) (Not just from the Graveyard.) (ex. "Card of Safe Return", "Bottomless Trap Hole", "Royal Oppression")
Mirage of Nightmare (1 copy may be used if no more than 1 Limited Card is used in the Deck and Side Deck combined. In addition, cards whose effects activate when cards are drawn or discarded from the hand to the Graveyard can not be used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) (ex. "Dark World" monsters, "Forced Requisition", "Solemn Wishes")
Final Countdown – added to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) – The removal of certain cards from the restriction list promoted this addition. –
Red Gadget – added to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if Semi-Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined. In addition, you can not use in the Deck and Side Deck combined cards with effects that include allowing a player to conduct extra Sets or Normal Summons or to conduct an unlimited number of Special Summons from hand.) (ex. "Ultimate Offering") – Players will find that the Gadgets are still quite strong with a good strategy.
Victory Dragon – added to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined. In addition, you can not use in the Deck and Side Deck combined monsters that are not Dragon-Type monsters or cards whose effects include Special Summoning non-Dragon-Type Monster Tokens.) – This card’s effect is incredibly powerful, especially in this format where card advantage is less of a concern so be wary of Duelists who like to fill out their Monster Card Zone with Dragons and don’t finish off your Life Points when they get the chance...–
Crush Card Virus – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (1 copy may be used if no more than 3 DARK monsters with an ATK of 1000 or less are used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.)
Deck Devastation Virus – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (1 copy may be used if no more than 3 DARK monsters with an ATK of 2000 or more are used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.)
Treeborn Frog – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if no more than 2 Semi-Limited Cards are used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) – This is so Frog Decks have an extra boost for certain effects. (D.3.S Frog’s ATK can now go from 2500 to 4000!!!) –
Tsukuyomi – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if Flip Effect monsters are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) – This card can still be used well with cards such as "Nobleman of Crossout" and "Mystic Swordsman LV 2". This change should balance out use of the card in competitive game play. –
Twin-Headed Behemoth – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (1 copy may be used if no more than 4 Semi-Limited Cards are used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) – Its effect is only powerful enough to be Semi-Limited but having more than 1 copy causes too many headaches. –
Night Assailant – moved to Forbidden Cards List – (Up to 3 copies may be used if Semi-Limited Cards are not used in the Deck and Side Deck combined.) – This card wasn’t strong enough to be Limited by itself and too strong for Semi-Limited when its "Recycle Factor" is achieved. (At least 1 copy in hand and at least 1 copy in the Graveyard. (An infinite discard potential that can power up many different cards’ effects.) –
Reasoning – added to Limited Cards (Big Monsters can be easily brought out with this.)
Asura Priest – added to Semi-Limited Cards (Its effect gives it an OTK combo.) Instant Fusion – added to Semi-Limited Cards (Thousand Eyes Restrict gives this card 1-to-1 destructive ability plus you can use the monster as a Tribute or Fusion Material for big combo.) Justi-Break – added to Semi-Limited Cards (Its effect speaks for itself.) Snipe Hunter – added to Semi-Limited Cards (Can destroy any card with decent chance 66% and any card can be discarded as a cost.) Dragon’s Mirror – added to Semi-Limited Cards (The release of Five Headed Dragon and upcoming Dragon Master Knight created BIG reasons for this.)
Delinquent Duo – moved to Limited Cards (This card is now much riskier to use with the presence of cards such as Dark World monsters, certain Zombie-Type monsters, cards that require removing cards in the Graveyard from play, Sinister Serpent, Treeborn Frog, and Dragon’s Mirror. Since there are much fewer 1-for-1 or 1-for-more cards used in Decks in this Format, the card number advantage from successful activation of Delinquent Duo doesn’t give as much of a strategy advantage as it would in Advanced or Traditional.) Pot of Greed – moved to Limited Cards (In this format, number of options often counts less than strength of options – Do you want to draw cards or clear the field or prevent attacks?) Spell Canceller – moved to Limited Cards (There are enough Trap Cards to make it Limit worthy.) Spirit Barrier – moved to Limited Cards (With cards like Astral Barrier, Reborn Zombie, and Spirit Reaper, Spirit Barrier becomes incredibly game-breaking to combo with. Even if it is destroyed, there are ways to recycle it. Try Mask of Darkness or combo Des Feral Imp with Different Dimension Capsule or A Cat of Ill Omen.)
Grand Convergence – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (It’s still very powerful but dead weight if "Macro Cosmos" isn’t on the field.) Heart of the Underdog – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (It was originally Forbidden because of Exodia the Forbidden One. Exodia can not be used with Semi-Limited Cards so Normal Decks can have greedy fun with 2 copies. Watch out for Elemental Heroes.) Lightning Vortex – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (If an opponent activates a card such as "My Body as a Shield" or "Ready for Intercepting" or "Book of Moon", the discard cost hurts bad.) Makyura the Destructor – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (Powerful Trap Cards are much less likely to wind up in hand along with Makyura in Grand Format unless its controller uses up a lot of his/her restriction slots for Trap Cards.) Sangan – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (Exodia Deck’s inability to search for pieces prompted this.) Witch of the Black Forest – moved to Semi-Limited Cards (Same reason as Sangan. Watch out for Sanwitch Decks. – Seriously.)
Astral Barrier – removed from restriction list Book of Moon – removed from restriction list Dark Mimic LV 1 – removed from restriction list Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive – removed from restriction list Dimension Wall – removed from restriction list Mataza the Zapper – removed from restriction list Megamorph – removed from restriction list Negate Attack – removed from restriction list Reflect Bounder – removed from restriction list Skelengel – removed from restriction list Solemn Judgement – removed from restriction list Spatial Collapse – removed from restriction list Threatening Roar – removed from restriction list Thunder of Ruler – removed from restriction list Waboku – removed from restriction list Windstorm of Etaqua – removed from restriction list Zero Gravity – removed from restriction list
There is a net difference of 8 cards subtracted from the total number of restricted cards. (From 193 cards to 185 cards) The list will get a little bigger with each update but will remain manageable for at least 10 years as long as the cards are listed in a specific order that allows players to easily check their cards. (A computer program will eventually have to be written for it but in a game with infinite growth potential, that is the natural course. Besides, in the fiction, computers in Duel Disks and Holographic Platforms are constantly used for card restriction enforcement. This is mentioned during the last Duel of "Grand Championship" in the anime.)
"Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys" remains off the restriction list because "Hand of Nephthys" is restricted to 2 copies, "Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys" is still a two-Tribute monster, and monsters are destroyed more often as a result of BATTLE in Grand Format. (The Phoenix’s effect requires destruction as the result of a CARD EFFECT.) "Dark Hole" works wonders for a Phoenix Deck by the way…
"Ojama Trio" remains off the restriction list because it’s a card that requires combos to be good and there are too many cards that can be SIDE DECKED for it. In addition, the "Ojama Tokens" can still be offered as Tribute for card effects and Ritual Summons. Giving an opponent 6 Level Stars on his/her side of the field is risky since the occasional Ritual Monster can be easily "splashed" into a competitive Grand Format Deck. (An example of this is seen during the Duel between Chazz and Alexis in the GX series.) By the way, for all you "Ojama" fanatics out there, try using "Flash of the Forbidden Spell" as a combo with "Ojama Trio"…
For the players worrying about "Burn" Strategies dominating the scene, try to remember that a SIDE DECK is still usable in this Format. One good "Des Wombat" with an Equip or a "Spell Absorption" or "Solemn Wishes" or "Barrel Behind the Door" could cause massive concern for an opponent using a "Burn" Strategy.
For the players arguing that the Advanced Format is good enough for originality with Chaos gone, let’s see how many top 8s don’t have a "Cyber Dragon" or "Hydrogeddon" or "Monarch" or "Treeborn Frog" or "Smashing Ground" or "Heavy Storm" in any of the winning Decks and Side Decks. Going from 20% originality to 40% originality is NOT enough for players who want the FULL experience of Yu-Gi-Oh! with 80-100% originality. (Something that wouldn’t be seen in Advanced Format unless a ridiculous number of cards are banned outright.) Advanced Format is not designed to recreate the level of excitement and unpredictability presented in the fiction because card rarity does not balance the metagame in real life as it does in the fiction. Advanced Format is however still necessary for the beginners and intermediates to learn how to play the game and how to understand the levels of versatility of different cards.
For the players complaining about the complexity of the Format, it is emphasized that as long as you approach the Format STEP BY STEP instead of taking it on as a whole, even a child can construct a Deck and Side Deck using Grand Format. The point about Grand Format being for experienced players is from what occurs AFTER a player first puts together a Grand Format Deck and Side Deck. Much more thought and play-testing is required in Grand Format to evolve the Deck and Side Deck so that the cards being used combine well with each other.
For the players saying how most people wouldn’t be able to handle the Format, it is emphasized AGAIN that this is for EXPERIENCED PLAYERS, not for everybody. It is also emphasized AGAIN that this Format is NOT meant to replace the Advanced Format. It is designed for high-level special event tournaments such as Invitational and Exhibition tournaments where Deck-Lists would have to be submitted before the day of competition. (And possibly the formation of a new league catering to the truly advanced players, not net-deckers who pretend to be advanced…)
For the players complaining about the "lack of options", there are more than 1,800 cards released in English NOT on the restricted card list for Grand Format. If you can’t put together a strategy with that many cards open to you, then your credibility in criticizing this Format is highly questionable…
For the players wondering about whether or not this Format could actually be successful… We’ll all just have to see what happens as a result of the Dragon Cup 2007 Grand Championship, so until then, all players are challenged to try figuring out a competitive Deck and Side Deck in this Format. Have fun and don’t forget to check out the official site for the Dragon Cup when it is announced. You can contact me at JohnnyBQuick@aol.com.
