Subject: Constructing an Insect Deck Part One- The Monsters--Dark Marik 07

Constructing an Insect Deck: Park One: The Monsters

The insect decks are usually overlooked in the current situation of today. Not many duelists attempt to build them because they are not as good as the monarch/stein decks of the Shonen Jump era. However, Cyber Stein is gone now, and this actually makes originally have more of a change of succeeding.

Insects have many good monster cards just begging to be used. Most insects have powers to destroy other cards like the little pests they are. There are two different types of insect monsters in general: Stall insects, and Agro Insects. When played correctly the two can work together to create a powerful deck, or work alone to make a powerful deck. Here’s some examples of both kinds of insects:

Stall Insects:

Swarm of Scarabs

Swam of Locusts

Needle Worm

Agro Insects:

Chainsaw Insect

Insect Knight

Doom Dozer

Jirai Gumo

Saber Beatle

Ultimate Insect (Lv 1-7)

Insect monsters have many search monsters, which can be used to bring more to the field including Howling Insect, Flying Kamakari #1, and Gokipon. Most of these monsters are good in any insect deck, however Flying Kamakari #1 can special summon any WIND attribute monster from your deck with 1500 attack or less, so unless you are playing with the Ultimate Insect series of monsters, it is best not to use this monster. Gokipon is Sangan only for insects, when it’s destroyed in battle. This monster is great at getting your Swarm monsters or Howling Insects out of your deck. Howling Insect is the best of the insect search monsters. When it is destroyed as a result of battle you may special summon any insect monster in your deck with attack of 1500 or less to your side of the field in face-up attack or defense position. You could block attacks with Howling Insect, and then afterwards special summon A Swarm of Scarabs to the field for next turn.

Insects also have a lot of very good flip-effect monsters including Man-Eater Big, Needle Worm, Magical Merchant and Nobleman Eating Bug. All of these monsters are very good. Man-Eating Bug and Nobleman eating bug when flip summoned will destroy one monster on the field, only Nobleman eating bug can destroy two, but he is a high level summon. Magical Merchant will add the top spell or trap card of your deck to your hand, while discarding all your monsters you’d draw before you would draw that card. Needle Worm will help thin your opponent’s deck by discarding five cards from the top of their deck.

Prickle Fairy- This plant monster with 2000 defense will defend your insect monsters from being attacked. As long as she is on the field, your opponent will be unable to attack any insect monsters, and also any monster attacking her switches into defense position.

The Attack force: One of the most versitle forces in an insect deck is Aerosol Bug. This 2000/2000, level 3 monster has only one disadvantage, when he is the only insect monster on your side of the field, his attack is cut in half. (Making him 1000/1000). However being level 3, he can easily pass through Gravity Bind, Level Limit Area-B, and be brought out with Insect Imitation easily. So he is a great monster to play, especially along side Prickle Fairy. Chain Saw Insect is good with his 2400 attack, while being level four, however his effect allowing your opponent to draw is a serious draw back, and he should be played only limitedly. Doom Dozer is a monster that every insect deck should have. He is as easy to summon as the Chaos monsters, in fact probably easier. He requires two insect monsters to be in the graveyard, remove them and you have him hit the field. He is 2800, with an effect that will discard cards from your opponent’s deck. Even if you use a Stall Insect Deck, play this card as a back up just if u needs it.

MY next tip I’ll go over how to decide on the spell and trap cards used in the insect deck.
