Basic
Overview
Monarchs, you have
probably heard the name in tournaments and local
areas that play Yu-Gi-Oh!, but what exactly is a
'monarch'? Here's a few answers to that
question: they are 5 or 6 star, 2400 attack
monstrosities, that are one of the major decks
in this ban list. Not only that, but they have
groundbreaking effects, such as destroying
spells or traps, or even destroying a monster.
These cards are usually easy to splash, or run
in any deck. Mobius the Frost Monarch is one of
these 'splashable cards. His effect is one of
the best of the 5 different monarch cards.
Mobius destroys up to two spells or traps on the
field, and his effect is optional, which means
he avoids some cards, such as pulling the rug,
which is one of the more notorious monarch
destroyers.
The Support
A normal monarch
deck has tons and tons of support. Support is
anything that helps the main center of the deck,
in this case, monarchs. One of the best support
cards is Treeborn Frog, which is terrible on its
own, but in monarch decks, it is one of the best
tribute fodder monsters you can find, and in a
rare version too! The effect is why it was
limited. Treeborn Frog revives itself if you
have no spells or traps during your standby
phase, providing either a temporary blocker or a
tribute for a monarch. Another great card in a
monarch deck is Gravekeeper's Spy, which, when
run in twos, gives you another blocker AND
tribute fodder via his effect, which special
summons another gravekeeper of 1500 or less
attack to the field.
The Monarchs
and the rest of the crew
The usual lineup for
monarchs is
2 mobius the frost
monarch
1-2 thestalos the
firestorm monarch
1-2 zaborg the
thunder monarch
0-2 raiza the storm
monarch
Unfortunately,
granmarg is not commonly played, except in a
deck built around him.
The rest of
the monster lineup usually looks a bit like
this, depending on what you run.
2-3 cyber dragon
1 jinzo
1 dark dust spirit
1 treeborn frog
2-3 gravekeeper's
spy
1 D.D. warrior lady
3 nimble momonga
2 exiled force
1 neo spacian grand
mole
1 spirit reaper
1-2 legendary
jujitsu master
1-2 dekoichi the
battlechanted locomotive
and possible other
choices, depending on your monarch build
Spell
Silliness
A typical spell
lineup is support, stealing monsters,
destruction, and a hint of draw power. premature
burial is an exception, as it revives monsters
when they are in the graveyard. Normally, there
are 1-2 soul exchanges and 1-2 brain controls,
depending on the build of the deck. add 2 enemy
controllers, then some staple spells, and you
have your lineup!
this is a basic
monarch spell lineup, this will vary depending
on the build.
1 premature burial
1-2 soul exchange
1-2 brain control
2 enemy controller
1 mystical space
typhoon
1 nobleman of
crossout
1 heavy storm
1 pot of avarice
0-1 scapegoat
0-1 book of moon
1 snatch steal
The Tricky
Traps
one of the hardest
things to choose for a deck are the traps. you
usually want 5-8 traps, as over that or under
that usually is a bad idea, as you might not get
the traps you need.
this is a basic
monarch trap lineup, this will vary depending on
your build.
1 call of the
haunted
1 torrential tribute
3 sakuretsu armor
1 ring of
destruction
as you see, there is
no mirror force. the card can be very prone to
destruction, and can be negated easily. it also
is wasted most of the time, unless you are
playing a swarm deck.
