THOUGHTS ON THE NEXT BAN-LIST

Hello Pojo readers, this is Delinquent Duo with the first of many articles to come, if I have time that is.  For those wondering, my best friend edited this tip and gave his opinions, which I greatly value, thus the name Delinquent Duo.  Today I will be discussing the ban-list that will be upon us in a few short weeks.  Honestly, I love this time of year for this game.  With the list coming so soon, here is what I believe needs to happen in order for the game to continue to have success.
The ban-list’s job is not only to limit cards that break the game, but to promote innovation and other deck types.  I feel we are in a time much like in Traditional format.  Before the ban-list, if you didn’t play Chaos, you weren’t going to win.  Now, if you don’t play Light and Darkness Dragon Perfect Circle, you can forget about winning a regional tournament or a Shonen Jump.  Sure other decks make the top 16, but LADD Perfect Circle has won the last two events, with the runners up being the same decks.  This needs to change so…

These cards need to be banned:

Destiny Hero- Disk Commander
LADD Perfect Circle is so dominant because of the ridiculous advantage it gains, and this is a big reason.  There are 4 or more ways to get this guy back and draw 2 (Call of the Haunted, Premature Burial, Destiny Hero - Fear Monger, LADD).  Disk Commander is always sought out by Elemental Hero - Stratos and always discarded with Destiny Draw or Phoenix Wind Wing Blast.  If Disk Commander was banned, it would help to stop LADD Perfect Circle from drawing an insane amount of cards.  Trust me, this little 300 atk monster makes a difference and he needs to go.

Crush Card Virus
I realize less than 3% of players have this card, but still the advantage it creates is insane.  First, it’s so easy to get off.  D-Heroes are dark and weak, apprentice magician, sangan, even D.D. Crow all set this off.  Second, it takes away your important monsters and yes, 1500 and above is way worse than what Deck Devastation Virus does.  Third, you get to see your opponent’s draws for the next three turns, so you know exactly what they have and what to prepare for.  It would be a shame to ban this card before everyone got to play it, but it just creates too much advantage.  When this card goes off, you’re probably going to lose.

These really are the only two cards that I think should make their way to the ban-list, which also means that everything else should stay the way it is.

These cards need to be limited to one

Raiza the Storm Monarch
This part of the list is where things need to happen.  Now, I have never said that the Monarchs need to be banned or whatever.  None of them are that incredibly broken to warrant that.  However, Raiza is the only monarch that screws up your opponent’s draw and as we have seen in the past (Yata, Time Seal) that is a bad thing.  Late game Raiza is very unbalanced, which pretty much means unfair.  LADD maybe pretty good, but it’s Raiza that really pushes LADD Perfect Circle forward.

Light and Darkness Dragon
Is LADD so overpowered that it needs to be at 1?  I’d say probably not because there are ways to get around this guy rather quickly.  However, in the interest of promoting more creativity, LADD should be limited to one copy.  At the very least, LADD should be semi-restricted, but I decided a one copy limit would be better.  Let’s not forget that LADD negates EVERYTHING and without treeborn frog or a spirit monster, you use a lot of resources just to get rid of the stupid thing.  If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m hoping this list strikes a blow to LADD perfect circle.

Phoenix Wing Wind Blast
For the same reasons as Raiza, this card should be restricted.  Messing up your opponents draw is a mechanic that doesn’t belong in this game because of the incredible advantage it creates.  This card just combos so well in the Perfect Circle deck, it’s chainable to just about any form of spell/trap destruction and even though most players only use 2, as long as you’ve discarded something like treeborn frog, destiny hero disk commander, or destiny hero malicious, you’ve just gained a real unfair advantage on your opponent.  If Royal Decree was put back to unlimited status, then I would argue that Phoenix Wing Wind Blast would be fine at 2.

These cards need to be semi-limited

  Destiny Draw
Most players only use two so let’s just make it official.  Most D-Heroes want to be in the graveyard anyways.  UDE should continue to try and curb the dominance of Perfect Circle decks.  They did a good job with Malicious, but Destiny Draw still makes too much of an impact.

Dark Bribe
This card is awesome, but not awesome enough to be restricted to one.  Even so, this card will almost always stop a card that was more important than the card your opponent drew from the effect.  The conditions of the list I have made is why this card can afford to be dropped to 2.

Card of Safe Return
Zombies aren’t really that much of a threat in major tournaments, but neither were Demise decks when the last list came out and look what they did to that deck.  If you thought LADD PC had crazy advantage, Zombies with this card beat that easily.  When playing zombies, you are in business when you draw this card.  Under this list I’m suggesting, zombies could make a comeback so this card needs to be under control.

Megamorph
Metamorphosis was really why Demise was so good and now that Demise is nowhere to be seen besides one showing in a Shonen Jump recently, I don’t see the need for Megamorph to be restricted.

United We Stand
This is just one of those cards that, when you look at the restricted list, you see it and ask, “Why?”  No one ever plays this card in a serious tournament deck, so why is it restricted?  We agreed that United We Stand should probably be unlimited, but this card would probably take the path traveled by D.D. Assailant and Abyss Soldier, going from restricted, to semi, and then to unlimited status.

Mage Power
Same as United We Stand.  I doubt people would play this if it was unlimited.  Stick this and United We Stand on the semi-limited list, make sure it wouldn’t lead to any abusive combos, then change it to unlimited.

Twin-Headed Behemoth
I don’t think bumping this card up to semi-restricted is going to change anything.  The effect only works once per game, keeping this card’s power in check.  Also, the reborn effect won’t work if the monster is tributed.  No one plays the one copy they’re allowed, so I don’t think anyone would play it at two either.

These cards should no longer be limited

Apprentice Magician
I don’t know why this card is semi-limited.  What is the difference between two and three?  I have no idea.  Gravekeeper’s Spy is at three, so Apprentice Magician should be as well.  The only worthwhile things Apprentice Magician can search out are itself, Old Vindictive Magician, Crystal Seer, and Magician of Faith.  None of those cards are game changers.  Spellcasters need the help, so lets put this card back to three.

Royal Decree
Jinzo being at 2 and Royal Decree possibly being at three would mean a lot of trap negation would be available.  The only reason I would un-limit this card is because I have Dark Bribe at 2, otherwise that would be an insane amount of negation.  Amazing how many side decks had 3 of these in them but as soon as it was semi-restricted, Royal Decree disappeared.  Some decks were running three Royal Decrees as the only traps in their decks, which the last ban-list destroyed.  Dark Bribe pretty much made this card obsolete, so Royal Decree doesn’t need to be limited.

These are my thoughts on where the next ban-list should go.  Keep in mind that I haven’t even touched any of the cards from Phantom Darkness.  We will need to see what they do to the Metagame before we can make a judgement on them.  However, beware of The Dark Creator, Dark Armed Dragon, and Cyber Valley.

Thanks to those who read this entire thing.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me at tinytim126@yahoo.com.  Please make any disagreements polite and intelligent, or I won’t bother responding to you.  You can e-mail me deck fixes as well and I will be glad to offer you my opinions.  I will feature decks soon and give my thoughts when the ban-list arrives.  Happy dueling and remember: 1) don’t ever give up and 2) don’t ever cheat.
