Trading Card Game Tips from fans
January 2008
Ethan Mark (not me) sent me his angel/light deck. Here’s what he has to say about it: I've been running this deck for a while now, and I just can't seem to get it down. I've gotten really far in tournaments with it, but i always end up getting squashed when my opponent brings out some godly-big noob card that no one in there right mind would use. Any way I could speed this up? Thanks! So, by the sound of this, I suppose this deck needs to be more versatile and fast. He wants his log to become a squishy rubber ball (it helps to have spikes and poison!). Here is his deck: Celestial Burst.
Celestial Burst 1 Shining Angel 2 The Forgiving Maiden 3 Winged Kuriboh 2 Winged Kuriboh lvl 10 2 Metiel, Sage of the Sky 2 Zolga 2 Marshmallon 3 Proto-Cyber-Dragon 1 Shinato, King of a Higher Plane 1 Voltanis the Abjudicator 2 Airknight Parshath 1 Neo-Parshath, the Sky Paladin 23 Monsters 2 Transcendent Wings 1 The Flute of Summoning Kuriboh 2 Pot of Avarice 2 The Sanctuary in the Sky 1 Premature Burial 2 Gold Sarcophagus 1 Shinato's Ark 11 Spells 1 Sakuretsu Armor 1 Mirror Force 1 Call of the Haunted 1 Torrential Tribute 1 Magic Jammer 1 Trap Jammer 6 Traps
So, he’s got a light, slim, 40-card build with a LOT a monsters crawling around. His big hitters seem to be Neo-Parshath, Voltanis, and Shinato. Buuutt..... We’re gonna have to change that up. Running for stall is Marshymarsh Marsh and some Kuriboh cards. In the monster lineup,. We’ll be seeing LOTS of change.
First up to die is Marshmallon, who is restricted. So we’ll take out a Marshmallon.
The next dead weight will be both of the Winged Kuriboh LV10 cards and one Winged. We can keep 2 of them, but these 3 just gotta go.
Stepping up to the plate is now both of The Forgiving Maiden cards. They’re just too bad for this deck. All three Porto-Cyber Dragons are gone.
Last, and certainly least, is Shinato. With only one of him, and one of his ritual, he needs to die now.
1 Shining Angel Moving on to the Spells in the deck to remove, we first find a few that can omitted automatically. One Gold Sarcophagus is dropped due to being limited, both Wings needs to drop, and Shinato’s ritual is bye-bye.
One Pot of Avarice Card won’t hurt much, and also happens be the last Spell to be taken out of the Deck.
Now for the Trap Cards.
Actually, I don’t see too much wrong with this. First of all, we wanna dump Magic Jammer and Sakuretsu Armor. Actually, that’s about it.
Now, here’s the new Decklist:
12 Monsters
1 Shining Angel 6 Spells
1 The Flute of Summoning Kuriboh 4 Traps
1 Mirror Force
You can see that I stripped away eighteen cards – almost half of the deck. Now, to put things back in. Starting at Traps, I’m going to suggest Dimensional Prison, a promo from WC08 that’s pretty much an upgraded Sakuretsu Armor (but better!) by removing the attacking monster from play! Fairy Decks like this one usually need lots of Counter Traps, so in goes: 2 Forced Back 2 Magic Drain 2 Divine Wrath OR 2 Dark Bribe (Since they’re hard to get) Making the new Trap lineup significantly better!
For Spells, we see lots of room for improvement. First, and nothing BUT first, we need a third copy of The Sanctuary in the Sky. It is the very core of this deck, and there’s absolutely no way it can go successfully without it. Well, that’s a little exaggerated. The Staple Card, Brain Control flops in here along with Swords of Revealing Light, for three full turns of one-sided action! And then we see the return of the trio Heavy Storm, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Lightning Vortex! If there’s anything else that I’m missing here, it just may be a Spell card such as Enemy Controller and Shrink. We need more buff for this Deck. If Fairy Decks don’t draw the right cards, which they can do a lot of the time, they’ll see some HUGE downtime. If that ever comes along, these two cards can help stall for a turn or two each until you draw into more cards.
And now for monsters....DUN DUN DUUUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, even though these guys are Secret Rares, they aren’t really worth too much. It’ll be a tough time finding them, but it helps to get them when you find someone with them and you say “Oh my god! These cards SUCK! At least my little sister wants them...” ;-) We want three copies of Nova Summoner in here. They work better than Shining Angel, and can summon good ol’ Parshath in a pinch. Next, I see a Gellunduo duo in Ethan Mark’s future. These adorable things can both serve as dounble tributes, attack, and, oh, looks lie it’s no longer “both”, stall! Again, a Secret Rare from Force of the Breaker, but this time, a little bit harder to bargain with it’s trade worth. But “Little Sister” would really look forward to this. Next, we wanna put in two Harvest Angel of Wisdom cards for some more Counter action and BAM! To the punch. Now let’s look at the Deck again:
19 Monsters 1 Shining Angel
2 Winged Kuriboh 3 Nova Summoner 2 Gellunduo 2 Harvest Angel of Wisdom
11 Spells
1 The Flute of Summoning Kuriboh 1 Brain Control 1 Mystical Space Typhoon 1 Heavy Storm 1 Lightning Vortex 1 Shrink 1 Enemy Controller
10 Traps
1 Mirror Force 2 Forced Back 2 Magic Drain 2 Dark Bribe/Divine Wrath
Wow! I got the Deck back to 40 on my first try! Well, that hasn’t happened before! Anyway, what I did was improve the Monster Lineup by replacing any Cards that could become dead weight with Stalling, Summoning, and some Attack. The Spells got a bit more supportive overall to the Deck’s main goal, and became a bit more supportive. It also swayed the Deck a bit from the usual Fairy goal, Life Point gain and Counter Trap activating, not to any specific theme at first, but really to control. Most of my Deck Fixes end up heading toward Field Control. The Trap Card Arsenal get some more hefty negation and the amount of Counter Trap Cards to support the rest of the Deck. Now, in this Deck, the Spells support the Monsters, who help to support themselves, and the Trap Cards help to ensure nothing gets in the way.
