Crystal beast
decks have so much potential, it makes me
sick. For the past few days I have been
locked in my room, save the occasional meal
or bathroom break, trying to make crystal
beasts work. At first glance, one would
think that crystal beast decks would be
insanely fast. They have sapphire Pegasus
that thins the deck and put crystal fuel in
the s/t zone, they have two forms of insane
draw power (rare value and rainbow ruins’
fourth effect), and they have oodles of
unfairly awesome support cards. So what is
their problem?
The problem with these
crystalline beauties is that they are slower
than dial-up (which is really saying
something). Rare value, crystal beacon, and
rainbow ruins (in essence, all of the cards
that make this deck purr like a Harley
Davidson) all require that you have crystals
in the s/t trap card zone. Most decks run 3
of each of the aforementioned cards, which
means that if you get them in your first
hand (which you almost always do), they do
absolutely nothing because you don’t have
any crystal in the s/t zone yet!
These decks are generally
OTK decks, so once it gets established, it
doesn’t need anymore draw-power. The time
that it does need draw-power is in the
beginning of the duel; however, in the
beginning it can’t use rare value and ruins’
fourth effect because there aren’t any
crystal beasts in the s/t zone. The
solution? DON’T USE RARE VALUE! It is really
a great card, but the problem is that the
only theme that can use it can’t use it
effectively. Not to mention that if you want
3, that is $60 bucks! So here is my crystal
beast deck list
Crystal Beastly-ness-osity
Monsters 17
3 sapphire Pegasus
3 amethyst cat
2 topaz tiger
2 amber mammoth
2 ruby carbuncle
1 sangan
1 snipe hunter
2 rescue cat
1 morphing jar
spells 20
3 crystal beacon
2 crystal blessing
2 crystal abundance
3 hand destruction
3 lightning vortex
2 terreforming
3 rainbow ruin
2 shrink
traps 4
1 torrential tribute
2 reckless greed
1 mirror force
The driving force behind
this deck is the draws. Hand destruction is
very key card in this deck, and as not many
people know what it does, I will explain.
Hand destruction is like a
mini card destruction; both you and your
opponent discard 2 cards and then draw two
cards. This allows you to toss useless cards
like the annoying opening-hand crystal
blessing, or you could toss amethyst cat
just to have her brought back by rescue cat.
That brings me to rescue cat. One major key
to this deck is to discard your amethyst
cats as soon as you get them. Then you can
use rescue cat to bring them back, and when
they are destroyed at the end of the turn,
they go straight to your s/t zone. This deck
has a lot of discards, but with extra
crystal support cards always being drawn and
an over abundance of revivable amethyst
cats, it is practically free. Reckless greed
almost never backfires in this deck, as the
cards resulting from it normally lead to
more draws or a field swarm which then leads
to lots of fuel for rainbow ruins’ drawing
effect.
I hope you guys will try
this deck out, as it is a lot of fun to
play, and without rare value, all 41 cards
of the deck could be bought online for about
one third of the price of just one Dark
armed dragon, and that is assuming that you
don’t already have some of these cards lying
around.
