Trading Card Game Tips from fans

JUNE 2008

Beginner's Suggestions by batato

Want to build a good deck to play with?

Don’t have experience building a deck or trading for cards you might want?

Just keep in mind a few of the following suggestions and you will be on your way!

1st – Structured Decks are a great way to begin.

2nd – When at a hobby league store Watch and learn from what experienced duelist are doing.

3rd – Do NOT trade your cards!  Only start trading when you are confident with the value of the cards you own and the ones you seek.

4th – While in a hobby league store look for people who Want to help you fix your deck.

5th – Watch your stuff!!!

1 – Structured decks gets you started in learning the game and normally comes with a deck you can play with right away.  Do not expect to beat experienced duelist with this deck.  It is just a way to learn the game.  However, after a while you will be able to edit your deck to get it competitive.  Note: if you want to build your own deck a Good Rule of Thumb is to keep your deck at 40 cards.  Many new players want to jam a bunch of cards in their decks…however, this is not a good idea because the more cards a deck has the less likely you will draw a card you want to play.  Yugioh has become a very fast game.   This means that you will not get through most of your deck before it’s over.   Keep it at 40.   Another Rule of Thumb is 20/20…meaning 20 monsters and 20 spell and traps combined.  You normally want about 14 spells and 6 traps.

2 – Watching experienced players is the best way to learn.  A lot of players are also willing to help new players fix their decks and even donate some cards if needed.

3 – Yugioh has some very expensive cards.  A new player came to our store and bought 2 packs.  In one pack he pulled a card called Judgment Dragon.  He didn’t realize that the card he pulled cost $200.00 Plus.  He was immediately swarmed by people at the store and had his newly acquired card gone within minutes.  Sure he got 15 cards for that one card….but value wise he got about $7.00 worth of cards for his $200.00 card.  This is why I say DO NOT trade until you know the values.  Always be on the lookout for people you can trust.  It’s a good idea to make friends and get valuable information.   Remember Ebay is a great way to learn the values of cards you pulled.

4 -  This one goes without saying…free advice is always good.  The more the better.  Just keep in mind that you will eventually need to do things yourself.  So learn and move on.

5 – WATCH YOUR STUFF…granted not all locations are the same, however for the most part if there’s an opportunity to steal valuable stuff…the vultures will be looking.  Nearly everyone falls victim to this at some point.  Don’t let it happen to you.  It is a very dark feeling to have your stuff stolen because you turned your back for just a few minutes.  If you go to the bathroom, gather your stuff and take it with you.   I cannot overstate this…your possessions will get lifted if it goes unattended.

Good Luck and enjoy the game.  Yu-gi-oh is a very good card game and you can have hours of fun playing it.
