Hey! RikotheFoxKid here with my
first article! So...
The September 2009 Banlist brought a
lot of interesting things, but one
thing that caught my eye was the
Semi-Limiting of Chaos Sorcerer.
This and the Unlimiting of D.D.
Warrior Lady may bring a rise in
Chaos again. But even better, it may
bring a rise in Twilight Decks
(which are generally more
fast-paced, and as we all know, fast
is better). So, being a Chaos fan, I
decided to give Twilight a try.
Now, I'm sure that there are many
out there who play on a budget. That
means you either can't afford or do
not wish to spend hundreds of
dollars (or whatever currency your
country uses) on the expensive
cards. We can cross the expensive
cards out as Honest, Judgment
Dragon, and Charge of the Light
Brigade. Honest and Charge run at
about $50 a piece, and Judgment
Dragon runs for $100. If you ask me,
that's crazy, and while I can afford
it, I'm not gonna spend about $500
for a set of JD, Charge, and Honest.
So, here's my decklist for a budget
Twilight Deck. I will explain how it
works by section.
(Note: I have tested this against
Glads. It does decent.)
So, let's start with the Monsters.
Monsters: (24)
1 x Dark Armed Dragon
1 x Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
3 x Celestia, Lightsworn Angel
2 x Chaos Sorcerer
2 x Aurkus, Lightsworn Druid
1 x Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind
3 x Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner
2 x Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress
2 x Necro Gardna
1 x Phantom of Chaos
1 x Plaguespreader Zombie
2 x Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
3 x Wulf, Lightsworn Beast
Now, I imagine I will already get
some backlash for the first card. I
called this a budget Deck, yet the
very first card I post is Dark Armed
Dragon. Well, Dark Armed Dragon is
important, and if you ask me, much
easier to get. Take it this way.
Would you rather spend $500 on a set
of JD, Charge, and Honest, or spend
around $40-$50 on a DAD? The answer
should be obvious. Also, it's not
too hard to pull DAD. I pulled mine
out of my second Gold Series 2.
While it ended up being the same
price as buying one off the internet
($25 for each GLD2), I got at least
40 other cards in return (including
one of those two Necro Gardna). But
if you have no chance of getting DAD
in the near future, you can always
drop him for something else (maybe
another Necro Gardna). Though if you
don't have DAD, I suggest running
just regular LS.
Moving on, it's an unwritten law
that Twilight should only run 2
Celestia. But this Deck doesn't have
any JD, so 3 is necessary for
destruction. Another law applies to
Wulf. Wulf should not be run at 3,
and some Twilight builds don't even
run him at all. But this Deck lacks
Honest, and thus lacks power, so
Wulf is needed. Plus, there are some
Spells that will allow you to make
him easier to use.
It's pretty obvious now, but the
days where Ehren was superior to
Aurkus are long gone. Aurkus should
always be run over Ehren (and it's
good to run 2). Phantom of Chaos is
good for copying a DAD or Sorcerer
you dropped. It is also good for
copying Lyla, and if things get
desperate, you can always copy
Lumina for swarming or Wulf/Celestia
for power.
While 7 boss monsters (DAD, Gorz, 2
Sorc, 3 Celestia) seems like much,
this is how much a regular Twilight
Deck runs (2 JD, DAD, 2 Sorc, 2
Celestia).
Everything else is standard
Twilight. With that, we move to
Spells:
Spells: (9)
1 x Brain Control
2 x Foolish Burial
1 x Heavy Storm
2 x Pot of Avarice
3 x Solar Recharge
The Spell lineup is probably the
most wonky lineup you're gonna see
compared to other Twilight Decks.
Pot of Avarice may seem like a step
backwards, but it's really only a
step backwards for JD, which is not
in this Deck. So, PoA is a good draw
card here. There are times where it
even helps get DAD out (especially
if your Grave is loaded with DARKs).
Foolish Burial serves as an
effective replacement to Charge of
the Light Brigade, though you should
only be dropping Wulf (unless none
are left in your Deck, which is a
very rare occurrence).
And even though the Deck has DARK
monsters in it, you should not run
Allure of Darkness. There are only 9
DARKs, and you would really much
rather prefer to NOT have them
removed from play. So, Allure is a
no-no.
Now for the Trap lineup:
Traps: (7)
2 x Beckoning Light
2 x Bottomless Trap Hole
1 x Mirror Force
1 x Torrential Tribute
1 x Trap Stun
Trap Stun is just a personal
preference of mine. You can really
put anything else in it's place. I
would suggest maybe a Solemn
Judgment (which I lack, explaining
why it's not here).
No I did not put Call of the
Haunted. The reason: Beckoning Light
is way better. Twilight has a
problem with bad hands, and
Beckoning Light can fix that. Call
on the other hand cannot. Call is
not as splashable in this Deck as
Monster Reborn was.
Other than that, it's standard
stuff.
The Extra Deck is personal
preference, so I'll skip that. I
will say though: Ancient Fairy
Dragon is decent if you've got some
Wulfs in your hand.
The Side Deck is personal preference
as well, but I'll post mine to give
you some ideas:
Side Deck: (15)
1 x Guardian of Order
1 x Tragoedia
1 x Prime Material Dragon
2 x Breaker the Magical Warrior
2 x Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior
2 x Allure of Darkness
3 x Book of Moon
1 x Gold Sarcophagus
1 x Mystical Space Typhoon
1 x Call of the Haunted
Guardian of Order is there for some
power, but I've mostly found him a
nuisance. Tragoedia stops OTKs.
Prime is for if you're fighting some
Burn or Mass destruction Deck. The 2
Breakers can serve as S/T
destruction. If you main the 2
Breakers, I'd main the 2 Allures as
well, because now you have some
viable Allure targets (trust me, you
won't be missing Breaker that
badly). I mained Gold in place of
Foolish when I didn't have 3 Wulfs.
MST, Call, and Book are standard
stuff. Garoth is in there in case
you REALLY need the draw power, but
I'm not a big fan of the Common
Lightsworns (unless you live in
Japan, where just about ALL of the
Lightsworns are Common).
And of course, all Decks have their
weaknesses. Like all Lightsworn/Twilight
Decks, this one's most obvious
weakness is a huge reliance on luck.
Everything has to play right, and if
it doesn't, you'll lose. But if it
does play right, then things will go
great. Another weakness is
relatively bad hands, which is
mainly due to the 3 Celestia and 3
Wulf. Stall is another problem. If
you swarmed your field with a bunch
of LS cards, then all it takes is 1
turn for you to Deck Out.
So tell me what you guys think. I
may post another article when the
chance comes.
