The Meta Doesn't Apply to Everyone by Baneful
The metagame doesn't apply to everyone.
For those who do not know, a metagame is
basically a set of advanced tactics that competitive
players use.
Usually, it's is one set of tactics that is
dominant, leading to some immitating it and others
looking to counter it.
What strategies prevail varies on the format,
and the metagame changes every couple of months.
Coverage of the metagame today is much less than it
used to be.
Right now Konami owns a blog that officially
reports tournament news, but before that, years ago,
Metagame.com was the main site to go to for this
kind of information.
The coverage
was massive and the hype it created toward the
Yu-Gi-Oh community was big.
Since Konami took over, it was moreso
cut-and-dry basic facts about the tournaments and
the writing became much less frequent.
Still, the mentality of the little guy trying
to copy the big successful guy is there.
Part of it was the novelty.
Tournaments always existed, but the Shonen
Jumps and increased journalism made the metagame
craze explode.
A lot of the articles on Pojo from 06 to 08
are largely meta focused to capture that novelty,
though after the end of the craze, there was a bit
of emptiness on here.
We often looked at these people who won these
tournaments as role models for us to emulate but
there's something to keep in mind.
For example, risk management.
Assume deck A is super risky and deck B is safe.
Let's say 100 people apply and 50 people are
using each for simplicity.
Deck A will dominate the top 10 players, but
will probably be very common in the bottom 20
players as well.
And deck B will be sandwiched in between.
