Card Game Tips from fans
Dark Magician Girl in 2014
We can classify this as a rant.
Recently, there was a COTD for Dark Magician
Girl the Dragon Knight.
As far as gameplay mechanics go, I agree with the reviews.
Good stats and strong effects but utterly
invalidated by being a standard Fusion (situational
and logistically illogical).
One place where I'll disagree with is the art direction. Some
reviewers praised it,while I deemed it sexist.
Dark Magician Girl is not a bad character at
all, but she was definitely made as fan service
through a male-centric lens.
A literal picture of DMG with a sword riding on a obscured dragon
is not very creative. But I do think fans give it a
pass because they've been wanting to see well-known
monsters fused together for a while.
COTD reviewer Terrorking gets it though.
In his review questioned why DMG wasn't
wearing any pants.
Is it truly practical for a knight to armor
themselves like that or was it the fact that people
found find DMG sexier when her legs are revealed?
I've mentioned that Konami does have a gender problem in my
"Konami's Card Art" article before.
Okay, why is this important to me? Well, as a gamer and a
duelist, I want us to move away from the whole
perverted-otaku subculture stereotype.
Cards like Gemini Elf and DMG aren't purely abstract expressions
existing in a void away from our cultural standards.
Nor is the exact way they're designed
essential and core to the YGO experience.
They're just part of a harem fantasy where
the strong knights are surrounded by sexualized
women.
Dark Magician Girl was made 10 years ago. Ten years later, Konami
hasn't changed a thing. It's sad how ignorant they
can still be.
