Decluttering the Ban List
I didn’t make this article based on what
hits I would like to see on the ban list right now.
But if you’re curious about current state of affairs,
this is the kind of list I would put out for this spring. Ban: Wavering Eyes, Elder Entity
Norden, Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer Limit: Performage Plushfire,
Performage Trick Clown, Solemn Striking, Twin Twisters,
Anti-Spell Fragrance, Kozmo Dark Destroyer, Pendulum Call I do think the ban list does need to be
decluttered though.
The issue is that older cards, which were once hit,
are still viewed by older standards while it’s true that
they are no longer broken due to power creep.
Here are 22 cards that can be laxed.
Most of these changes are long overdue.
Dark Magician of Chaos (0
à 1) At its time of release, powerful spells
like Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity were around.
Now, with many of those spell cards banned, along
with the difficulty of archetype-based decks accommodating a
generic LV8 monster, DMOC wouldn’t be remotely broken.
It might be able to go to 3, but I’d caution against
any possible combo that lets you use the same spell card 3+
times per turn.
Elemental Hero Stratos (0
à 1) This card was banned during a time when +1
LV4 monster was very rare and self-searching was very rare.
Nowadays, just about every deck has a card like
Stratos. Look at
Skullcrobat for example.
Stratos is the marijuana of the ban list.
Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders (0
à 1) I agree that Dragon Rulers were a dark
time period for YGO, but allowing the weakest one back into
play wouldn’t be broken at all as it wouldn’t have the
others to accommodate it.
Would be good support for Dragon and EARTH decks.
Sangan (0
à
1) This was a problematic card back when
rank-3’s were overwhelmingly powerful years ago.
There were cautions against bringing it back when
Burning Abyss was tier 1 as well.
But, nowadays, leaving Sangan at 1 will provide a
good searcher for almost all decks without making any deck
broken.
Tribe-Infecting Virus (0
à 3) This card was very broken 10 years ago,
but it’s just an average card by today’s standards.
With Sinister Serpent banned, and now returned with a
nerf, that’s one less issue.
With Raigeki at 1, Dark Hole at 2 and so much other
removal out there, TIV now stands as a -1.
El Shaddoll Construct (0
à 1) Shaddolls got hit, but this hit was
draconian and it killed them.
Allowing it back at 1 would buff the deck without
allowing too much abuse either.
Thousand-Eyes Restrict (0
à 1) It’s not broken with Metamorphosis banned.
Yes, there’s Instant Fusion but that essentially
amounts to paying life points for a Smashing Ground.
I would still leave it at just 1 because stalling
isn’t good.
Time Seal (0
à
1) 10 years ago, a loop with Mask of Darkness
and Tsukuyomi was a problem.
Nowadays, the combo is too slow and has so many ways
of disruption.
Artifact Moralltach (1
à 2) It was broken during the HAT era in 2014.
2 is a perfect balance between being underpowered at
1 and overpowered at 3.
It makes Artifacts and Artifact engines viable but
not too strong.
Debris Dragon (1
à 3) Bringing out Black Rose Dragon with one
Normal Summon isn’t as powerful as it once was.
Only niche Plant decks will use it, and even with
this change, they’d be very lucky to even break into a tier
2.5 deck.
Deep Sea Diva (1
à 2) Aquatic decks, synchro summoning and rank
2’s aren’t as much of a threat anymore.
Even with self-searching, this card won’t be broken
at 2.
Inzektor Dragonfly (1
à 2)
Inzektor Hornet (1
à 2) I don’t like the deck, but the deck is
very low tier now so it can be laxed.
Neo-Spacian Grand Mole (1
à 3) With Special Summoning a whole lot more
prevalent nowadays, it’s harder to lock out the opponent.
Plus, people don’t even use one of this card.
Rescue Rabbit (1
à 2) Dino-Rabbit has been power creeped out.
It could use a buff.
Thunder King Rai-Oh (1
à 2) With Pendulum Summoning nowadays, this
card’s anti-SS effect is less reliable.
3 may be too much stun, but 2 can certainly help some
rogue decks.
Tour Guide of the Underworld (1
à 2) Rank 3’s and Burning Abyss aren’t
overpowered anymore.
Book of Moon (1
à 3) This card is not abusable and can never
provide a +1.
Plus, power creep has even bested this ultra-versatile gem
too.
Saqlifice (1
à
2) Not a fan of the Qli deck, but limiting
this to 1 isn’t essential with Scout at 1 now.
Compulsory Evacuation Device (1
à 2) With Pendulums out, not every deck uses
cards which are vulnerable to this card.
It’s not a staple anymore.
Tragoediea (2
à
3) If 2 isn’t even seeing play, 3 won’t be
broken.
Dragon Ravine (2
à 3) Dragunity’s aren’t much of a thing.
It dumps but it’s a -1.
And people aren’t using this.
